I just wanted to get some advice on what type of beginners dance class would be good for me. I have never taken a dance class in my life and I am 40 years of age. I have spent the last year getting myself back into really good shape. Also I have been working allot on my flexibility just because I always wanted to be flexible and I have almost got my right and left splits but I am pretty far on my middle splits. Well here is the my issue, I travel for a living so I am only home on the weekends and there are a limited number of dance classes on the weekends in Little Rock AR. I would like to try ballet but it seems most of the weekend classes are all ballroom (and later on Friday night). I am looking also for a basic class to get some all around skills because I pretty much have none.
Also on another note I had told my wife about wanting to take a class and she said that she would love to take a class with me. Here is the problem with that and I don't know exactly how to handle this. She has taken many dance classes when she was younger and she was on dance team in high school she can dance really well, and she used to try to teach me but she always laughs at me when I don't get what she is trying to show me and I think if I take a class with here I will end up not following through because of this. I love spending time with my wife but I would not want to take a dance class with her unless I was up to close to her level of dance.
Thanks in advance for the advice. 5 Replies to Advice for beginners dance classes for Adults |

I just wanted to respond to your second point, regarding taking class with your wife.
If you put your dance ambitions on hold until you feel you are at her ability level, you may well end up putting off taking a class altogether, and then you will never get there!
My advice to you is to learn at your own pace and dance at your own level, not your wife's. You don't need to be the best dancer in your class to be the best dancer you can be!
Best of luck with your search for a suitable class.

The only reason I was going to wait a bit before joining her in classes is due to the fact that she pokes fun at me, not so much for the difference in our skills. I just wanted to get a little better then I am now. Either way after checking the only thing offered in Little Rock on the weekends are Ballroom. |

I would hope that your relationship is strong enough for you to be open and honest with her and tell her how you really feel. I think you should have an honest conversation with her and let her know that her laughing at you (even though she doesn't mean to) makes you uncomfortable and that you would like to really try classes on your own. I know if my husband approached me like this, I would really appreciate it. I think if you really want to dance you should and that you should not let anyone stop you. You never know. You may have a latent talent! |
