Hello all, I am new here. I haven't introduced myself to the board at all but I'm not really sure how to do that so I'm just not going to do it.

I'm looking for advice on how to set up a safe and comfortable and LOW COST (!!!) home gym / dance practice area in my basement, which as a hard, cold, concrete floor.

The main issue is how to cover the floor with something that will cushion my joints when jumping, and will not slip underfoot. And how to do this without spending a ton of money. I know there are various portable dance floor tiles and aerobic flooring materials but most of what I've seen is quite pricey, the cheapest options being about $7 - $8 per square foot.

I had the following idea in mind: to buy really cheap foam padding, cover it with a vinyl mat and just duct tape the whole system down to the floor. My idea is that the foam will provide the shock absorption while the vinyl mat on top would protect it from getting shredded and provide a low-traction surface for practicing rond de jambes and tendus. What are your ideas?

Your idea isn’t a bad one, but I'd make sure the foam is of the highest density. I’d also look at using spray on glue to stick the vinyl mates to the foam, otherwise you’ll find the tape on the edges ripping your vinyl.

you cant beat a harlequin floor but obviously cost is a big factor so yes your idea is great!

good luck and post a photo once its done.
