I have 2 students who are terrified of a back somi (tuck), but have great aerial cartwheels, aerial walkovers, front somis, butterflies, and back handsprings. We've put aerial cartwheels and aerial walkovers into a combination, and doen aerial carthweels directly out of a turn. I"m trying to think of some other things to do. We've tried side flips, but since I never had to do them, I'm not sure how they go. Right now they're working on Arabian dive rolls and aerial walkovers switching their legs, which I must say, isn't working out very well. Ideas?

Onodis (back handspring with a half twist to a front walkover), Front tucks with a half twist, front pike, front layout. If you watch some elite gymnastics beam routines you might get some of ideas of what your students can do on the floor.

There also is the option of working through those fears. What equipment do you have? Check belts, spotters, etc.

They're recreational tumblers. One girl CAN do a RO back handspring, back tuck, but scared herself once (went too high and opened up early) and hasn't done it since. Her mother has informed me that she is not to work on them or else she'll be pulled from the program. Okey dokey. The other one is Super tall and does backward tumbling. . . heavily, if that makes since, but she is super flexible so her forward tumbling is really nice. She was going to quit because she was too afraid, but I told her if she stayed in, there was plenty of forward tumbling she could do that would make use of her flexibility. It didn't take her long to get gorgeous aerail walkovers and aerial cartwheels, but then I was stuck. She's working on her front somi, but the other girl has hers already. The onodis is fascinating to me, so I'm going to look it up. I like the idea of looking at some beam stuff. Thanks.

Like the poster above me said try a roundoff backhandspring with a 1/2 twist and then do a bounder out of it(front handspring taking off of two feet). Or if they have their back handsprings and aren't scared of those have them do 1-arm back handsprings. You can do multiples and switch arms.

You could do branni's(a no handed roundoff and it takes off like an aerial you just put your feet together and land like a roundoff), Front handspring into a bounder, Front handspring front tuck, aerial walkover chasse' aerial walkover. The latest thing I've been having two of my kids try is double turn hop aerial walkover. They seem to have trouble stopping the turn and hopping into the aerial walkover.

If I think of more I'll let you know
