Adult Dancers bodybuilding to ballet! en>fr fr>en By gregb1 Comments: 84, member since Tue Jan 06, 2009On Thu Jun 23, 2011 09:05 AM
I am a pure adult dance enthusiast. If someone had asked me when I came out of high school "whether I would have ever taken up ballet" I would have laughed and said "yeah right"! Coming out of high school I was an aspiring junior bodybuilder. Somewhere along the line I finally came to the realization that I just did not have the genetics or will to do steroids to effectively compete. A female acquiantance at the gym suggested I give mixed pairs a go. My then girlfriend was a cheerleader who took up working with weights with me and so we were a natural fit. One of the gym staff was a former pro female bodybuilder who had dabbled in mixed pairs. I had no clue on how to do lifts let alone make them look graceful so she suggested we should probably go to a local dance school. My girlfriend being a cheerleader had taken a ton of ballet and she got her teacher to agree to help us out in her offtime. I started to really improve and then started to seriously wonder whether I was actually beginning to love this ballet stuff. Her teacher was becoming aware that I was enjoying learning and the next thing I knew I was at the barre with my girlfriend. I've loved it ever since. One day if I ever see my ex girlfriend and her teacher I will thank them profusely. Just thought I'd share a feel good story about falling in love with dance. 4 Replies to bodybuilding to ballet! |

Wish I had taken it up alot earlier. Man oh man is ballet physically intensive. Most people have no idea of how intense it is. |

Oh, yes! You're right there! Most non-dancers view all dance as just something "easy" to do because, after all, it's dancing, and how hard can THAT be, right? Wrong!! Dance, especially ballet, is very demanding. People have no idea what dancers have to go through to make it all seem effortless and "easy." |

That is so very true. Occasionally I get out and run but in all reality ballet is all I need. I have so much respect for company dancers and what it took for them to get to that level. I've seen professional pilates instructors simply throw in the towel as they simply did not realize how hard ballet is. I always try and tell them "that this form of dance takes alot of patience and practice". Despite this, many never come back to class. I really hate to see that but it happens. My time has come and passed but it does not affect the way I feel when I nail a combination. It is a bonafide high when you hit steps by the numbers. That is what I shoot for and that is what keeps me coming back and also practicing at home. Going to performances and watching the professionals is such a pleasure. When you have some idea of what they put into it then it makes the performance so much more cool to see. |
