Strengthening Working out with ankle sprain.... Any ideas? en>fr fr>en By danzin_gurl Comments: 144, member since Thu Dec 30, 2004On Fri Jul 08, 2011 11:46 PM
I'm on vacation and had planned on going running each morning, the second day out here I tripped and sprained my ankle- I can walk on it without pain but it's still super swollen and black and blue. I've been taking it easy for 3 days- I've got a week left in Hawaii and call me crazy but if I don't find a way to work out soon I'm going to really go insane! Missing my daily runs is starting to make me irritable and I don't want to be cranky on vacation! I don't have access to a gym so I'm basically depending on push-up like activities... Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated thanks!! 3 Replies to Working out with ankle sprain.... Any ideas? |

Swim If you really want to push yourself hard, do as lifesavers/comp swimmers do and hold a buoy between your legs and propel yourself forward only with your arms.
Sometimes sprains are minor enough to continue using with serious strapping - but if yours is all colourful and swollen, it's not one of these (as you already worked out) |

Pilates could help you here. Do planks, bridges, etc. They don't take up much room and you can do them about anywhere. You can also work on your flexibility, if you need. To help your ankle get stronger, even when it's not ready to run, you can write the alphabet with your foot (using your ankle, not your hip or bending your knee strange ways), do circles, and just massage the tender area to help reduce swelling. If it starts hurting worse, stop. |

Boxing. It's pretty much all upper body - if you can stand, you can box. |
