Does anyone know how to make odor eliminating pads for dance shoes like the ones sold on DDS?
www.discountdance.com . . .
It seems like it would be pretty simple to make but I don't know what they put inside of it to absorb the odor? 12 Replies to Odor Eliminator Pads |

The bacteria that cause foot odor and body odor thrive in dark, damp, warm places, like a sweaty shoe buried in a dance bag. But if you take your shoes out and let them dry in the open air, this should eliminate the problem with no need to buy or make anything at all. |

Yeah the description specifically mentions is absorbs moisture and prevents bacteria. You'd need to find something that absorbs moisure easily...rice? They tell you to put your cell phone in rice if it gets wet to dry it out, right? Kitty Litter? That's used to absorb all kinds of things and supposed to help with odor. The other things that comes to mind is the silica gel packets that come in shoes at the store that have "DO NOT EAT" stamped all over them. Baking soda also is supposed to elminate odors. I don't know how effective it would be for shoe odors, especially if the root cause is bacteria/moisture.
I never used anything in my shoes, just aired them out and never had an issue. |

I have found success with putting baking powder in my shoes every few months. They never smell like new, but it does seem to neutralize the scent.
In between, I have put dryer sheets into the shoes.
I also have a car deodorizer (the kind that you hang from the rear view mirror) in the bottom of the bag. I don't know that it prevents the smell, but it does seem to freshen things up.
I recently started using Freeze athlete shoe spray and it, too, seems to make things more pleasant.
The most helpful thing, however, has been to wear tights or some sort of sock in my shoes. That absorbs the sweat and prevents the odor. |

Years ago I remember reading somewhere on here that if you put baking powder in your shoes, and toss them in a freezer, you can eliminate odor very easily. I've done it a few times, and it works well. |

THAT'S DISGUSTING! If anyone puts shoes in my freezer, I'm totally kicking their arse. But I don't have to worry about that because Corinna never cleans her shoes. I end up cleaning them when I get too embarrassed to be seen with her wearing them.
And FYI - corn starch (I think y'all call that corn flour in the UK) works better than baking soda. Do NOT put your shoes in the freezer though. Ugh, I'd have to kill you. |

I ALWAYS wear tights or socks under my dance shoes. This seems to be the best at preventing the smell. But I also keep a dryer sheet or two in my bag to keep it smelling fresh. |

Just let them dry out. If the odor is still present, just buy a little scent ball of potpourri bags they sell at places like discountdance.com

Hey, just to clarify, the odor pads are not for me
I have been lucky enough to never have bad BO or any bad smells coming from my feet/or shoes.
I just thought it would be a fun project to do in my free time and also something useful that I might be able to sell at my studio to help raise money for a summer intensive.

Sometimes it works if you leave them in the fresh air for a while, but it does depend on how strong the odour is. |

My SO uses liberal amounts of Odor Eaters powder. I admire the idea though. Are you a savvy sewer? It seems like it'd take some sewing. |

I can sew decently enough -- I think well enough to be able to make something like this.
So my only problem really is that I don't know what I could put in the pads to give them an odor-eliminating property. I figured someone somewhere has made something like this themselves but a google search didn't turn up anything! Which is why I thought to check here.
I've never heard of odor eaters powder, do you think that would work to put in the sachets? Or baking soda? Potpourri?? Lol! |
