So I just bought a new Cali bun wig (from Emerald Key) at the McInerney feis this past weekend. I really love the feel of a bun wig, and this one seems to be nice and full, without being massive. I haven't danced in it, only jumped around, but it has a nice bounce without moving too much. It was super easy to put on too!
Do you think I have it positioned well? My sister thought it should be up higher on my head, but I think I just need to do something on front- maybe a small poof? I wouldn't know how to do this with a bun wig though; any ideas? Also, I quickly made my headband before the feis thinking I was going to buy a bun wig and wear it to compete that day (which I didn't end up doing). I made a thin one since I knew my bun wig wouldn't go up high; however, I'm thinking the headband may be a bit small. Any thoughts?
PS- Ignore the tag still attached in the third picture; I hadn't even taken it off yet! haha 6 Replies to New Bun Wig |

I like it! I think you have it positioned well. My dd wears hers slightly higher, but there is no wrong or right and yours looks fine. I agree that it needs a pouf. My dd wears the Cali too. She does the pouf the same way she used to do it for the full wig, and then incorporates the ends into the bun she makes on top of her head to anchor the bun wig. Your headband looks nice on you. My dd wears the same headband she wore with her full wig, which is just over an inch wide. It's fun to experiment with different sizes and styles and see what you like best. |

not sure about how to do anything in front of the bun wig, but i agree that it does need to be a smudge higher up. Maybe stretch it out more so it stays the same length in the back, bur comes up higher in the front? I don't know, i don't own a bung wig lol. However, i have an idea that fixes your headband issue. The headband looks great! But what would really make it pop is a small crystal headband (like a tiara) with just two rows of rhinestones, like the one from the link below. If you put that at the bottom of the headband and then put the headband in so it almost sits on top of the tiara-crystal-headband-thingy, it'll give it a little more height and really make it stand out and pop.
the first picture on this page, with the purple headband, has what i'm talking about at the bottom and the top of the headband. Just one at the bottom would really take your headband to the top!

I'm pretty sure emerald key sells some, but their new website has nothing listed under tiaras, where as on the old site, i know they had a bunch. Hmmmm lol
anyway, i hope this helped! |

It looks great! I love big bun wigs, although I do think you need a poof or maybe some loose strands of hair or something a little more relaxed than just tightly pulled back. Also, maybe a little higher? I don't usually wear a bun, but when I do I'll hold my "dancing" posture (ie head held high, a little tilted back) to make sure that the wig is still visible when I'm standing on stage. Provided this doesn't bring the big right up to your forehead it generally works. With the poof, rather than a thin one you would do to fit in front of a full wig, make it extend back to where your bun starts for a more natural, fluent look.
I've attached some bun wig pictures to show you what I mean with different hairstyles. (The 4th or 7th picture is what I'd be going with, personally.) |

I think it could be a little more forward....
A couple ideas on softening the area around, you can do like a pouf in the front, basically just like you would with a full wig, just make sure the sides of the pouf are soft and blended into the rest of your hair, and the ends tuck under the wig. You can also pull a few curls down from the edges all around and pin them to your head. Another thing I have done, was leave some hair at the front and sides of your face out of the pony tail, and then pull it back loosely (like a semi-pouf) and pin/clip it down under the edges of the wig. You need a tight ponytail to anchor the wig, but then you can put sections up more loosely around it. |

I agree that it could be placed a little higher up on your head, but besides that it looks great! I might have to get one, LOL! |

I think you positioned it just fine, and the wig looks great on you. I always put my Cali in that position (plus a small poof), I don't like the 'exploded brain' look very much that just pops into my head whenever I see a bun wig right on top of dancers' heads.
Isn't it a great wig? I love my Cali. |
