Hope you are all having a good weekend! We had a busy day yesterday. Got up and ready early and headed to a beach about thirty miles away to check out one of the local seafood restaurants since we were dying for some good non-chain seafood. When we got there it was closed (for the season!) Had no idea that basically the whole town shut down in the winter, so we were kind of bummed. It was 70F outside so we did go walk on the beach for about two minutes- then it started pouring rain and it got super windy so we had to leave.

Us at the beach yesterday. He wasn't mad; just cold!

We ended up going to the furniture store and buying a new queen set and a king mattress. Our old mattress was basically falling apart and both of our backs hurt non stop because of it, so it was definitely time. The delivery truck got here around 5pm and we spent the rest of the night setting everything up. BJ built us a headboard from scratch; he did a fantastic job. I'm thinking about refinishing it next month sometime, but he says he likes it raw like this. I like it both ways so I'll be fine either way!

And a recent picture of me...since I never post any on here anymore!

I want a puppy soooo bad! An English bulldog specifically, but those are so pricy and not exactly in reach right now. The only thing holding us back right now is that in order to bring a puppy into our apartment, it has to be housetrained first according to the lease. And we have to put a $200 deposit on it. I think the housetrained rule is kind of ridiculous...makes it harder because now we have to find one that doesn't pee on the carpet. Even if we keep it in the kitchen most of the time with one of those baby fences it STILL has to be 100% housebroken. Grrr. :P

I hardly ever get really bad headaches...but last night I had a migraine from hell. It was so bad I was literally holding my head and saying, "Stop talking to me, don't talk to meee!!!" because BJ kept asking what he could do and what I needed. It started around 8pm last night but I could kind of feel it creeping up all day. I had bought a bottle of Tylenol last week but when I went to look for it last night, it was literally no where to be found. BJ offered to go get some but I sai no and said I would just try to go to sleep. I DID eventually get to sleep but I woke up at 1am for some random reason and my head was still hurting.

Anyway, woke up this morning with BJ at 4:30 before he went to work, no headache. I went back to sleep for about 2 hours after he left and since then I've had a super small one, I guess like a residual headache. I don't know. It sucks though! Still no medicine to be found so I'm having to tough it out, but I'll live.

I definitely wasn't in the mood to cook dinner last night (weird for me because I love to cook) so we ordered Chinese from one of the restaurants around here. It was alright; definitely not amazing like we were expecting. Tonight I plan on just making a really easy meal of spagetti and breadsticks, I still don't feel up to par.

In other news...got a big check deposited into our bank account from the Corps. They paid us a substancial amount to cover moving costs to move me out here. BJ was like, "Uhh..I hope they don't know it didn't cost anywhere near that to get you here." lol. He double checked this morning to be sure all the money was ours to keep, and he got confirmed that yes, it was. We ended up paying off 2 credit card bills and it feels great!

Also, Felsa fixed on of my pictures of me and I'm so thankful for that! I had this big hair going across my face and it annoyed me so much to look at. Which sucks because it's one of my favorite pictures of us. Anyway here is the finished result:

I love it!

I found this new website called foodgawker.com and WOW. I'm addicted. It's like Pinterest only with food. I have so many recipes copied off there already and I can't wait to make them!

What about getting an adult rescue dog? Some organizations place dogs in foster families after they arrive at they shelter, and the foster families work with the dogs and assess behavioral issues as well as train them. Some adult dogs are already trained (house trained and otherwise) depending on their background :)

Sara, we go to the PX a lot. There's one huge one and then several smaller ones (you probably know that though!) and we go to the big one a lot just for the heck of it. I have a lot of "wife" stuff from there and a really nice Under Armour black jacket (in the pic above) that I got from there. I've been to the commissary once, but not for groceries. I got lost and had to find directions lol. We do most of the shopping at Wal-Mart (which I hate because it's soooo crowded all the time) and some at Piggly Wiggly because that's a great place to coupon! I'll have to try out the commissary sometime though, I hear it's pretty awesome.

^Do you have specific links to any of those fb pages? I tried looking and don't think I'm pulling up the right thing. I'd love to take a look though.

So last Friday my husband got home early, at like 1pm (oops...1300). He says they usually get out early on Fridays but it's almost 2pm now and no sign of him yet. I knew they would be busy today; he came straight home last night and started fixing his Bravos for inspection.

Image hotlink - 'http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/DutyDressEnlisted.jpg'
Far right is the Bravo uniform. (to the left is the Alpha uniform, same thing as Bravo only it has a coat over the top).

They also had an inspection on all their deployment gear so he had to drag all that out of the closet and into his car. Man, he has so much STUFF. When he gave me a webcam tour of the apartment before I got here, I was like, "Are you sure there's even room for me there?!" Seriously, the spare bedroom closet is filled with excess uniforms and seabags FULL of supplies, then all his utilities (the uniform he wears to the shop everyday) take up about half of our closet. It's crazy! Before I got here he had ALL his uniforms; his blues, Alphas, Charlies, summer utilities... everything in our closet. So the first day he was gone I moved everything except his winter boots and utes to the spare bedroom. My reasoning was he doesn't wear blues every day so there's no point in keeping them in our room. He was like, "Well, I guess that makes sense." haha. What would he do without me? :P

Every time I hear a car door outside I spin around on the couch and see if it's him. And it's definitely not. I even woke up way early this morning to get everything done around here so I won't have to do anything when he gets home. So far it's looking like the usual 1800 arrival. Blah.

Oh my gosh, I made ribs for the first time last night! They were so good. I cooked them in the crock pot for eight hours and they basically fell off the bone. I only ate one...I'm not much of a pork person at all but had to try out my creation. BJ loved them so that made me happy.

Oh, and this is going to sound really dorky but he seriously made me get butterflies yesterday. I came up next to him when he was ironing his uniform and I TOTALLY caught him checking me out. He was trying to be all discreet about it but it wasn't working haha. He said, "You look really amazing right now." My heart melted because I totally was not feeling it all day yesterday. Seriously, sweetest thing ever! He's definitely not overly affectionate or super lovey-dovey so it's always a nice surprise when he says/does something out of the blue. Awwwhhh. <3

As for weekend plans...I don't think we have any actually. We're going on a morning date to IHOP tomorrow and then probably grocery shopping. Other than that, we'll probably enjoy a nice weekend in with Netflix. Sounds good to me!

^That's sweet! Thank you. "Ours" is actually my brother and his fiance's 'song' so that one actually reminds me of them. The song is adorable though, I love it! One of the few by Taylor Swift that I don't mind.

(above pic (wow...it's huge. Sorry)- found it on Pinterest! Just printed it out and it's in a frame. Love it.)

Guys, guess what I did? I was making peanut butter cookies today and I started smelling smoke...my electric mixer had smoke coming out of it! Aaah I just about panicked. I don't know what happened exactly, not sure if it's because it's the first time I've used it in eight months, or because it's just...old? I got it as a wedding present and thought it was pretty good quality but who knows. I was only blending brown sugar, flour, and eggs so it's not like the poor thing had to power through tons of dough. I'm kind of scared to use it again just in case it decides to actually catch on fire.

This is a perfect reason to convince hubs I NEED the red KitchenAid stand up mixer. :D Doubt he'll go for it though...I've been trying to pull that one off for months now, hasn't worked. Hmmm.

So every Monday since I've been here I've noticed I cook something in the crock pot! So I guess it's unofficial Crock Pot Monday around here. The first time I cooked vegetable stew, second was ribs, and today I have some ham and vegetable chowder in there. I'm a little nervous about this one today actually; the last time I tried this recipe it didn't taste so good but BJ convinced me to try it again.

Oh...the oven is beeping. PB cookies are done. MAN these things are huge! About as big as my whole hand. The recipe said "jumbo" but I definitely didn't think they would be this huge.

Does anyone watch Dr. Phil? I've watched it every day at 4 since I've been here and BJ is at work (so...basically Monday - Friday). I love it! I was never into it before because I'm kind of skeptical about TV psychiatrists but I think this guy is pretty genuine and not in it just for the money. Who knows though.

My mom, step-dad, and little sister are coming to town this weekend while BJ goes to unload a MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit...a big boat basically) just returning from deployment. He's excited, it's the first thing that's actually related to his job that he gets to do. I'll miss him but 1) it's only for 3 days, and 2) my family is coming to stay with me for 2 of those days. It'll go by fast.

I found this game on my Blackberry that I'm totally addicted to. It's called Word Mole and all you have to do is make words out of letters they give you, and try to get as many as you can in two minutes. Sounds so dumb but it's addicting!

Have a good week, everyone. :)

I burned through two handheld electric mixers in a row (literally... sparks and smoke coming out) before I decided to get a KitchenAid. Such a great purchase. If it's not in your budget right now, maybe it could go on your Christmas list??

I was watching Dr. Phil right now. So horrified! These people are harassing a girl who died of Huntington's Disease! So sad! I love Dr. Phil though. Sometimes people need a good dose of reality. I love whenever he says, "And hows THAT working out for you?" when people are trying to justify the most ridiculous behaviors.

Anyway....I loved the picture you posted of the uniforms. Thanks for the visual explanation!

Also, I LOVE catching my man checking me out. I love turning around and seeing him standing there with this dopey smile on his face. And then I say, "What?!" And he just says, "Nothing..." and smiles and kisses me. Ahhh I love it!

Yay love.

^Oh my gosh, I love that website! All the food looks sooo good.

Husband left at 4:30 this morning and I won't see him until about 5pm on Monday, blah. I absoutely hate when he leaves, no matter how long/short the assignment is. He's excited about this one though so I tried to not let it bother me much. He gets to go help unload the boat I mentioned earlier. Traffic here is going to be absolutely crazy tomorrow because of everyone coming back, but it's a good thing they get to come home! Definitely.

My parents and little sissy will be here soon! Well, mom actually just texted me saying they left, so that means they'll be here in four hours. But still. Four hours closer than before! I'm excited. It's kind of sad though because my little sister thinks BJ will be here (the two of them are like BFFs) and she doesn't understand WHY he's not here. Hope she's not too depressed when she gets here. :/

Parents are leaving on Sunday morning sometime. I've decided to watch the Super Bowl all by my lonesome. I'm not the biggest football fan, but I know I'd be watching it anyway if BJ was here! That's okay though. He's pretty upset he has to miss it!

I'm so hungry! I bought a box of the super-bad-for-you Velveeta maccaroni & cheese just for my depressed self this weekend, so I guess I'll go make that. It stinks though because one box is enough for like, four meals for me. Hopefully little sis wants some tomorrow!

Above pic is one we took last night. One of those nights where you don't want to go to sleep because you don't want it to be tomorrow alreay. :(

I'm also doing the February Photo-a-Day challenge. I read about it on one of the blogs I follow and it seems fun. I wanted to take the pictures with my good camera, but I hate taking one picture, plugging the whole thing up, downloading, etc. So cell phone it is. The pics are inside the spoiler.

I didn't do the Photo a Day thing today because the subject was "stranger" and I would feel weird taking a picure of someone I didn't know. I'll definitely do it tomorrow though!

So...my husband was supposed to come home late tomorrow night...but he texted me today and said it could be Tuesday before they finish up. :( I decided to invite two of ours friends over here to hang out tomorrow so I'm not alone and bored so much. They're excited, I'm excited so it should be fun.

Ughhhh.

Got word early yesterday morning that BJ is going to Yuma for a month for more job training. This will suck. Already planning to go back to my hometown and stay with my parents, AND work some hours at my old job. I'm only excited about this because I can make some money, but being away from him for a month isn't going to be fun. He's excited though, mostly because he's never been farther west than Tennesee, and also because he gets to actually do his job instead of just sitting in a shop all day.

Guess it could always be worse. He could be getting deployed. It just sucks because just as soon as we get settled in and used to being around each other all the time, he gets "taken away from me" again. Oh well. Such is the life we signed up for.

My visit with my parents went well. Went by too fast, but it was still nice having them here.

I've had the shopping bug soooo bad lately! I know it's because I have no personal money and therefore can't do any shopping. That will change next month but still. It's like this itch I can't scratch! Aaaah.

My friend deployed two weeks out of SOI.
The USS Baatan SG just got back from a 10.5 month long deployment. They left four months earlier than their scheduled leave date, with just a 14 day heads up.
I could go on and on... It can always be worse! Breathe! Take the time to adjust to being alone. It's not all that bad. Plus, he'll have his phone.

As you know Krystal, this comes with the turf particularly for military. It also happens quite a bit in other occupations. Construction workers have to go where the jobs are. Business people often are on the road for extended times. It is even possible to be "virtually deployed" while still at home as I was in several crises. Working as I did with the military my entire career, I saw many different ways of coping or not coping with this. The mature military families handled it well. The strong marriages handled it well. BTW this was not just "a guy thing" with the wife staying home during a TDY or extended deployment. In my business nearly 40% of the military personnel were female and we had a large number of military couples.

I think you are taking a good approach to this. He's gone for a month and you have a place to go which is not all that far away and you have an ex-employer who doubtless welcomes you back, even for a short stint.

If your hubby is going for training that is a good sign. Someone thinks enough of him to send him to a special school and of course that helps in career development, perhaps even if he chooses not to make the military a career. Specialty training is crucial and wise people get all of it they can. (I actually took an on-the-job course at our training school which ended two weeks before I retired.)

When my agency was in crisis mode, I was often called upon to work 16 hour days, 7 days a week for months on end. A so-called "Six Day War" (in 1967) lasted for 11 months for me. I didn't go anywhere and I did come home at night, but with a need to sleep that didn't permit much time for my wife and children. My daughter was born a month before that crisis and I barely remember her first year. Regularly scheduled shift work with tours lasting several years was often required. In a two career family (wife was a teacher then) this often cuts into time together. The military never sleeps...and of course this is true for many other professions...police, health care and on and on.

We who know the business of the military, either by being in it, married to it, or in my case working side by side with military, understand and appreciate the sacrifices the individuals and family members make for us.

I salute you and your hubby.

Jon

Sara, this past weekend he was actually helping to unload two ships that came back from deployment. That might have been one of the ones he unloaded...I know one was the USS Mesa Verde, but I don't remember the name of the other. He said a bunch of the guys getting off the ship (fellow red-patchers) kept saying, "Thanks for doing this, we appreciate it. We would have been here all day and we just want to go home!" He said it was nice to feel appreciated for once :P

Thanks for the nice words, Jon! You're always an encouragement to me.

We're in the early stages of planning a weekend trip to D.C. sometime soon. We were talking about it yesterday and we're both excited about the possibility! Our trip would only be 3 days/2 nights, so short and sweet but still fun. Any recommendations on making a short trip to D.C. worthwhile? I've been looking around online and I'm really surprised at how inexpensive it is. There are tons of free attractions which is awesome.

The other was the USS Baatan. I had both written initially, but I cut it down to strike group for OPSEC purposes. But it's public knowledge so I guess it doesn't really matter, lol.
I feel bad for the folks on the USS Enterprise. On their way back from deployment they got sucked into Bold Alligator. I'm sure they just wanted to go home!

3 days is enough time to get in a lot of museum-ing and sight-seeing! Try to get a hotel that says it's near the DC red line, if possible, that's the central metro line and will get you to a big percentage of the sights. The Smithsonian stop is where all the big museums are, as well as the Washington Monument, the Lincoln memorial, the reflecting pool, and all of that fun stuff. My favorite museums are the Natural History Museum and the Air and Space Museum. The Museum of American History has been redone and I have to say I'm not a fan, but they do have a great exhibit of artifacts that are essential Americana. I would recommend getting an early start, you'll have more of the museums to yourself. The National Zoo is really fun and also free.

Best places to eat, I think, are Dupont Circle, Bethesda (which is technically in Maryland) and Chinatown. Getting a day pass on the metro is a great option for tourists, you pay the set amount and can use it unlimited-ly for a day!

PM me if you want more specific advice. :)
