Anyone already working on their Spring 2012 schedules? (karma: 1)  en>fr fr>en

I know we usually do a big official schedule thread, but I thought it would be a good idea to get a thread going to help each other in the planning stages, since I know most schools release their spring schedules to view around this time.

If I can get these, I'm very tentatively planning the following schedule. I'm a History major/Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies minor (possibly bumping to a major if it won't take much longer).

MONDAY
3-4:15 Morality and Social Change

TUESDAY
9:30-11:20 Environmental Studies
12:30-1:45 Holocaust: History and Memory
3-5:50 Environmental Decision Making

WEDNESDAY
10-11:50 Organic Farming
3-4:15 Morality and Social Change

THURSDAY
9:30-11:20 Environmental Studies
12:30-1:45 Holocaust: History and Memory
3-4:50 Organic Farming

Nothing Friday. I'm just undecided on if this is the route I should take. It's 3 classes for my minor (maybe future major) and 2 for my major, total of 17 credits. The only reason I'm hesitating is that I have some general ed classes left; one literature class, one humanities class and two writing intensive classes (that I'm 99% certain will be covered by upper level history classes I'm planning to take).

I know that I SHOULD try to do one general ed class a semester to break them up, but my current semester is mostly general ed classes and I feel like a semester of nothing but degree specific classes will be amazing. However...will I regret it when I'm that last semester senior having to take two freshman classes?

I know what is offered during my Winter semester (we call it Winter 2012 at my school but I'm assuming we're both talking about the Jan-Apr term?) from looking at the course calendar but the times and days that they are offered isn't out for a few more weeks when registration rolls around. What I take next semester will almost entirely rely on how much of my self-paced Math upgrading I get done. If I was to apply myself and race through it, the best case scenario would be for my to finish MATH 053 that I'm working on and also complete MATH 072. If I do that, I can take Financial Accounting 1 and Fundamentals of Finance and then I'll be officially finished everything (electives and required course) for my first year of my degree plus more. The actual chances of me getting through 072 are pretty slim, though, so those might have to wait until my compressed Spring semester (May/June).

So, failing that first plan, I'm going probably take some of the following:

BUS 214 - Leadership Skills
ENG 250 - Advanced Composition
BUS 313 - Employee and Labour Relations
BUS 281 - Negotiations and Contracts (this is only offered in the Winter)

There's many more I can take because the classes I've done last year and the one I'm doing now have opened up a lot of possibilities for me as they were the main pre-reqs for the program. I'd love to take lots of elective-y things but I think it's best that I work on the things I need to get me further. So, in all likelihood, I'll be finishing up my MATH 072, and then doing 3 of those courses I mentioned. I work two part-time jobs so that's about the maximum I would take on for school.

Cool idea for a thread, this really got me thinking ahead! :)

I pushed off the majority of my gen ed classes til the very end cause I was sincerely dreading them, and it sucked hard. I just wanted to GTFO, not sit in geology labs. Being in class with overachieving, dumb question asking freshmen as a fourth and fifth year senior (I did an extra semester.) Break em up, seriously.

But back to scheduling... My school still hasnt posted the course schedule yet, so I havent scheduled. Regardless, I'm having major surgery in mid January that will keep me off my feet for two months, and therefore, no school for me. I'm debating taking an online class, but everyone's been telling me that they're a TON of work, so I'm hesitant. I don't know how inclined I'll be, or even able, to do ky readings and assignments while I'm hopped up on prescription pain medicine. I have to be in grad school an extra semester or year (depending how things pan out with this semester) because of ROTC anyway, so I guess I'm not really in a rush anyway.

I finally got my registration date for Winter 2012 and it is October 20th starting at 6am. Courses go online to start creating schedules on the 13th so I'm counting the days!

As an update to what I wrote before about my whole math upgrading dilemma, I'm doing quite well with getting through the material. I am a couple weeks away from finishing my 053 course and I have decided to take 072 through another distance ed facility as apparently no one at my college can accomodate me for the course I need. If I can get that distance course done by end of September, like I said, I will definetly be registering for some of the classes that have it as a pre req. Only this is, if I work hard to include those classes in my schedule and then don't complete it in time, what will I do? I guess failure isn't an option. Once I'm done the current math course, I will have no classes on Mon/Tues/Thur so those can be completely devoted to math.

Still wanting to take BUS 214, though!

I'm graduating in December with my first degree, but I'll be finishing up my second degree in Spring. I don't know what my exact classes will be yet, but they'll all be related to Human Development and/or Family Studies, and I'll probably throw a Biochem or Genetics in there as well.

Regarding saving your gen ed classes for the end, I'd avoid it if possible. I love school, like, really love school. But even I have senioritis bad this semester. I saved all of my B.S. and fun electives for this semester, just cause I knew I'd be burned out. All of my classes are so interesting, but I'm still struggling to make myself care about them. I'd be pulling my hair out if I had to be taking a bunch of generals.

I sent my advisor a huge doubtful email yesterday about the rest of my life which basically was coming down to thesis or not to thesis. I only have 6 credits left of my masters program. I can do a 6 credit thesis which is an approximately 100 page research paper set out to answer a specific question about a specific topic using various research methods along with studying what other scholars have done on the topic (but the thesis needs to be all new original research). I was OK with not doing one at first, but I'm afraid if I decide to apply for PhD's later it will kill my chances.

The other option is to just take two more graduate level classes (each will probably have a 30 page or so paper, which in some grad programs seems to be the length of a thesis). If I do that I could just have school once a week and start job hunting. But I have less then two weeks to decide. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with the coursework option and I just want my advisor to assure me that I'm not ruining my future by taking more classes.

If I do take classes I will likely have

11-1:30 Media and American Elections
2-4:30 Journalism in Conflict and War Zones

I decided to start planning my spring schedule tonight, since I'm currently putting off studying for a test. Good job me.

Anyway, I'm thinking about transferring in the spring, and if I do, I have NO idea what my schedule is going to look like. But in case that doesn't work out, it never hurts to have a back up, so here's what I think I'll be taking if I end up staying where I'm at.

MONDAY:
11:50-12:40 Analysis of Algorithms
3:50-4:20 Electromagnetics
4:35-5:50 Logic Design

TUESDAY:
8:00-9:15 Circuits 2 (ugh, I hate morning classes)
9:30-10:45 Semiconductors
6:20-9:05 Circuits Lab 1

WEDNESDAY:
11:50-12:40 Analysis of Algorithms
3:50-4:20 Electromagnetics
4:35-5:50 Logic Design
6:20-9:05 Logic Design Lab

THURSDAY:
8:00-9:15 Circuits 2
9:30-10:45 Semiconductors

It's 17 credits, so I'll be busy, but it's actually not a bad balance of easy and hard classes. I might swap out Semiconductors for one of my easier electrical classes, like Communications for Engineers or Electrical Engineering Computing Methods, but I'm not sure if I'll want to save those for later. On one hand, I'll probably want to get OUT and I won't have much patience for Communications for Engineers, but on the other hand, I'm sure I'll welcome an easy class when I'm working on my senior design project. Opinions, anyone? I'll talk to the boyfriend as well. He's taken all these classes, so I'm sure he'll have some good advice.

Good idea for a thread!

Moonlite, are you entirely sure that you don't want to get a phd? Because if you think there's even a possibility, it'd be smarter to suck it up and do the thesis. I know that every grad program I've looked at says to do the thesis, otherwise it's close to impossible to get your phd. Depending on your program, your advisor might know differently though.

I'm meeting with my advisor tomorrow to formally switch my major, declare a minor and swap advisors. I can't wait to get this sorted.

I have a list of nine classes I'm interested in taking. The maximum allowed at my college is eight (24 hours), and I don't think I personally can do more than six (18 hours), but I'm having a hard time deciding which ones not to take. What I have on my list is:

MWF @ 9:10 History, reconstruction after Civil War
MWF @ 10:20 History, Ottoman Empire
MWF @ 11:30 World Religions (this one is required, and also seems the most interesting)
MW @ 12:40 British Literature before 1550 (because I'm in the after 1550 class now)
MW @ 2:20 Children's Literature

TR @ 8 Historical Geography (Only on the list because it's honors and I need to take at least one honors class every semester)
TR @ 9:40 Computer Literacy (probably one of the ones I won't end up taking because it's not required, but I've wanted to take it ever since I was a freshman)
TR @ 11:20 Faith and Reason (no idea what this class is about, but it was recommended to me, and also is honors)
TR @ 1 History, American Indians

This is what I will mostly likely be doing for Winter 2012:

Monday and Wednesday:

Foundations of eBusiness 10:30-12:20

Tuesday:

Negotiations and Contracts 2:30-5:20

Thursday:

Leadership Skills 11:30-2:20

Friday:

Business Communications 11:30-2:20

I'll also be doing a self-paced math upgrading class for part of the semester. All in all, that is about 12 credit hours and I'm trying to decided if I want to add a fifth class...thoughts?

What year are you? I know that I wrote down all the classes I had to take, and calculated how many credits I had to take each semester to graduate in December 2013. It ended up being 15. So figure that out, then decide :)

Thanks, Kekoa!

To do my degree in the typical four years I need to do 15 credit hours (5 classes) per semester for 8 semesters. I'm about 1 class behind on this right now because I have also needed to do 3 upgrading courses along the way (I'm starting the 3rd in the next few weeks).

I have also taken classes in the Spring and Summer compressed semesters so that I could catch up when I was even more behind last year. If I can find a class that fits in somewhere than I think I'll add it.

I think I've decided against adding the 5th class and doing my upgrading course at the same time. The most I've ever done is 4 classes without upgrading so I think that this would be a big too much of a leap. I talked to my boyfriend about it and we talked about how I tend to get a little too overwhelmed sometimes with lots of work to do so it's best to not make a schedule that I know might just put me in a bad position.

Hopefully by next Winter (one year from now) I'll be entering my 3rd year and only be about a semester behind. Not bad for someone doing upgrading and working two jobs. :)

C, what does it mean to upgrade a course?

After a week of hassle trying to find my advisor and having to formally switch my major, I'm meeting with the head of the anthro department tomorrow! He sent me a really nice email, saying he couldn't wait to work with me and was happy I was joining the department. It made my day!

I should have explained that better. It's when you need some sort of high school equivalent course as a prerequisite or correquisite for another course or program. I need the equivalent of Principles of Math 11 with a C or higher to get into year 3 and 4 of my BBA and to take a couple of the first year courses (accounting and financing). Unfortunately I only took Essentials 11 in high school so I have ended up needing to take 3 courses to get that level of math.

Ah, makes perfect sense! :)

I need advice everyone! I met with the head of the anthropology department and am very excited about joining. However, I have to decide between two almost identical schedules.

First!

Monday
12-12:50 Physical Anthropology Lab

Tuesday/Thursday
9:30-10:45 Language and Culture
11-12:15 Anthropology of Sex
12:30-1:45 Holocaust
2-3:15 Greek and Roman Mythology

Wednesday/Friday
10-10:50 Intro to Physical Anthropology Lecture

OR, I can do

Monday
12-12:50 Intro to Physical Anthropology
3-4:15 Morality and Social Change

Tuesday/Thursday
11-12:15 Anthropology of Sex
12:30-1:45 Holocaust
2-3:15 Greek and Roman Mythology

Wednesday
10-10:50 Intro to Physical Anthropology
3-4:15 Morality and Social Change

Friday
10-10:50 Intro to Physical Anthropology

Now, the first one is what I really NEED to be taking, if I want to be responsible. However, I'm not sure if having such a packed Tuesday/Thursday will be overwhelming. Thoughts?

I was going to vote the first one even before you said that it was the one you should be taking. Sure, Tuesday and Thursday are long, but in the second schedule Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are fairly long and they have really awkwardly long breaks in between classes on some day, and on other days breaks that aren't long enough to even eat lunch.

The first one has 15 min. breaks in between everything which is good for going to the bathroom and eating some snacks and stretching your legs. I'd do that one. :)

I think the first one sounds best as well. I really like the idea of having pretty much all of M/W/F free to do homework. Not to mention, all of the classes except the last one (Mythology) on T/Th are in the same building, with the Mythology class being in a building right across the quad.

I would love to start working on my Spring schedule but classes haven't been posted yet. Registration opens November 7. You'd think they would have schedules up but no..

I think I'm extra huffy about it because I'm going to be starting graduate classes and I want to do it NOW! :P

I am trying so hard to figure out my schedule. I need to take the freshman writing class, but I can't have any classes before 10 am due to athletics, and all of the writing classes are before 10 am! I'm a bit stressed out about it, but I'll just talk to one of my advisers again.
