How much fabric needed to make a Tutu Overlay? en>fr fr>en

Hi there!

Hoping someone out there can help me. I have a plain white tutu & bodice I'm decorating for Sugar Plum Fairy.

How much fabric should I buy to make a donut-shaped overlay?

I've found some really beautiful embroidered lace on Ebay. It's pink with flowers. Thought it would be easy to decorate with crystals, etc.

It's sold by the yard. The width is 57".

My tutu is 14" from basque to tulle edge.

I not a seamstress by nature...mostly sew pointe shoes! LOL

How many yards do I need to make a decent overlay?

Thank you so much! And if I've missed a previous post on this sorry! I did look. :)

I'd say 1.5-2 yards, as it's quite wide. just a thought when i make overlays mine sit about an inch from the edge of the tutu, I just find it looks cleaner.

Have fun stoning :)

How wide is the fabric, that will play a huge part in how much fabric you'll need.

This is how I do it. I usuaully estimate first by measuring the diameter of the plate across the widest section and then make a paper template. Put your tutu on a flat surface. Lay some tracing paper over it. Use a soft pencil and trace out a rough shape for the inside and outside edge of the plate. Cut this out and take it with you to the fabric store and fling it out across your fabric. Include some "error margin". The main thing you need is the widest part to fit on the fabric. Have fun!
