FPS games - do you invert? en>fr fr>en By Sumayah Comments: 4705, member since Wed Nov 12, 2008On Mon Oct 10, 2011 10:34 AM
I was playing Gears of War 3 with some friends and when they passed me the controller I had to invert stuff and they (as usual) made fun of me. I grew up playing the old flight sims on Windows and the inverted Y-axis is just ingrained in me now. When you push up, the nose of the plane goes down, when you pull back on the down arrow the plane pulls up. Left makes you bank left and right makes you bank right. So now when I play first person shooters, that's how I have to have my controls set up. Left is left, right is right, up is down and down is up. How do you set up your controller? 10 Replies to FPS games - do you invert? |

I don't care about the y. I can never remember which way I set it up anyway. I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles for like 60 hours, and I still can't remember whether or not the y-axis is inverted. But x CANNOT be inverted. Like duh. Circle strafing is awkward with an inverted x. But for some reason I voted for inverted x-axis. Oopsie. |

Yeah x-axis inversion boggles my mind, it just feels completely unintuitive to me. I can play non-inverted, but I hate it. I much prefer the y-axis be inverted so when games give me the option it's the first thing I do. I can also understand x+y inversion together, because if you stuck a stick in a ball and put it on a fixed point, when you pull the stick left the ball tracks right and if you push up on the stick the ball tracks down, but comprehending it and actually having it be playable are two different things for me. And I agree, strafing (especially circle strafing) with x inversion is just ridiculous. I can't do it. |

I need up to be up and down to be down!
Gears of War rocks...that is all. |

The only time I care about the y-axis is if it's a flight sim. And then it HAS to be inverted because that's how a real plane works. But if I'm just occasionally looking around every once in a while, I don't care because I won't remember which way I have it set anyway. |

I mostly play PC games, not console games, so I'm thinking in terms of arrow keys and joysticks here...
I try to avoid playing most non-flight-simulator games on joysticks (not my favorite controller). When I'm using keyboard or mouse, the up control has to represent movement towards the top of the screen for me, otherwise I get really (and I mean *really*) confused. I play flight-simulation type games with the same controls if I'm using arrow keys or mouse, where up moves my plane/ship/whatever in the direction of the top of my screen. Now when I play a game with a joystick, I have no problem with the joystick back=(pull) up, joystick forward=(dive) down. I think the two controls are just completely separate in my mind |

I play Halo with the boy and I always make Y inverted. Otherwise I totally blow at jet packing. Actually I am still pretty bad at jet packing, but at least I get off the ground this way. |

I've always sucked at games and was never able to get the handle of moving the character and the camera at the same time. I was playing Portal with a friend of mine a few weeks back and he suggested I try inverted.. I had no idea what it was. Yep.. I need Y-axis inverted. IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. I don't like X-inverted though it makes sense to me too (Tiller Towards Trouble!). |

I suck at FPS, but DH tried to teach me to play Halo a couple times. I could never figure out why I always seemed to be running in to the floor, especially going up ramps. Eventually, I figured out that I need the Y-axis inverted. I kept looking down when I meant to look up. I guess it just makes more sense to me. |

I don't play first person shooters very often....if ever. But I'm sure inversion would mess me up. I'm not very good at gliding/flying in Spiro (the first one where you go through hoops in an optional level, it used inversion). |

Platforming is a different kettle of fish. If I've got a 3rd person view, I don't think I care how the camera is set, I could be wrong though. It might also be that they don't offer any other controller options so I'm fine with them however they're set (I think). |
