Scarf as a prop, song to accompany? en>fr fr>en

Hello all,

I am wondering if anyone knows of any songs that are about using a scarf and waving it, twirling it etc. that I could use in my pre-dance classes. I find right now the kids just run and hold the scarf out to their sides. I would like to try and have them start to use the scarf as a prop and experiment with it more. They react quite well to songs with directions, such as Shake Freeze, Shake Your Sillies Out, Head Shoulders Knees And Toes and Freeze Dance.

I tried to search iTunes and did not find anything. I looked up scarf, and scarf dance.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I don't know of any song for scarf dances. Perhaps others will have suggestions. BUT: Usually I just play a soft and flowing classical piece, such as a waltz. With the older kids I ask them questions; for example: "What happens if you hold the scarf out, and you spin round and round?" or "Can you throw your scarf up in the air and catch it on your arm/leg/back/etc.?" I find this works really well with 5's.

For younger students, if you dance with them, you can sing-song over the music what you are doing, and some of the students may try to copy you. Or sing/say something like: "Now we're spinning with our scarves, round and round, round and round..." It may not get all of them, but it should work for most.

Hope that helps!

I dont' use the scarf with an actual scarf song, but I've used it draped over our heads when doing things across the floor - it helps with posture.

In my 3-4 class the one time we all sat in a cirle with our legs in, and pretended we were a flower. We reached forward over straight legs, using the scarf as our petal and then layed back on the floor.

I've also used it in a throwing up high and then either catching it in a different position, or spinning around.

But, if you can find a scarf-related song, post it! I'd love to try it.

Not about scarves, but "Love is Like a Butterfly" by Dolly Parton is slow and pretty. They could use the scarves to float and fly like butterflies. Listen here - youtu.be . . .

I use the song "WildFlower"- Tom Petty to have them act like flowers or wind.

I do the same NDow, that way I'm able to tailor the movements for the class, a rerecorded track won't know if the kids are a coordinated bunch or ones with two left feet will it?

I do, I'm there watching them!

I do circles overhead to the front or side, waves, throwing and catching, small waves or circles on the floor, lines from side to side, let them explore the shapes and the quality of movement of the scarf.

I have "Musical Scarves and Activities" from Kimbo. It is good for developing coordination and working back muscles in young students.

Johnette downing made a whole album on scarf songs. Ryhthm in the scarves is good - My personal favortie is "Water, wind and world", because it can be done with scarves or as just a movement activity with out the scarves to.

Heres her album on Amazon: www.amazon.com . . .
