Some lucky girls are born naturally flexible. Like my previous dance teachers' daughter- she was literally in the aplits in her moms belly womb!!! Well good for you!! :( some of us are sooooo tight! Dancers like me have to try 10 times harder for that split! (which i, at 25, still DON'T have!) but then again, I started dancing at 15, but still, it's tough! It's comforting that my 32 year old former 7 yrs Rockette is not flexible either. :) She doesn't have her normal splits either lol. She teacges my contemporary class and she's wonderful!! My ballet teacher says my hips are tight, so I know I need to do more hip stretches. I still do my Warmup dvd with Michelle Assaff- great warmup!!! So I need you non-flexible dancers to give me some luv!!! Lol thanks for reading :)

Ugh, tell me about it. I am not naturally flexible either, and always need more time to stretch, more time to warm up, and need to hold the stretches that extra bit. Its always a matter of, "you guys split so long, i'll join you in a bit". Cold splits isn't for me, because i have injured myself like that in the past...

I feel ya!!! But i am glad to hear that you have kept it up!

I completely understand. I started dancing when I was around 2, and had amazing flexibility until I started doing Irish Dance in my teens. I guess I stopped working on flexibility and now it sucks. I'm having to go back and work on it again so I can row properly. We just have to keep working on it!

I am not naturally flexible either. Well I definitely don't have hyper mobile joints.

Right now, I am still flexible, it just took a hell of alot of work. Once you finally get to where you want to be, it doesn't take much work to maintain. But obviously if you haven't stretched for years then you are going to find it increasingly difficult.
Just keep trying, practise as often as you can, and you WILL se results.

Good Luck!

me either, and it blows. I've been dancing/stretching for almost 20 years now, and I still dont (and never have had) my middle splits.

My back is reasonably flexiable, I guess. My hip flexors are a cruel joke though.

Now I know a lot of people aren't going to believe this, but I'm not naturally flexible. I have to start warming up 1-2 hours before class starts. When I sit in a center split in the morning my legs will not go farther then maybe 110 degrees. After I warm up I can make it look like I have a full split, but my hips actually won't let me sit in a perfect split. Same with turn out. I can make it look like I have perfect turn out sometimes, but I don't. Keep working hard and learn how to work wih what you have :)

I can relate. I couldn't touch my toes until I was 25!! (Granted, I wasn't dancing until 24... But still.)

But instead of focusing on what doesn't come naturally, think of something that DOES. Sure that girl over there has perfect 180 turnout, but I bet she has another area she battles that comes more naturally to you. Everyone stuggles at something. So what are you good at??
