Hey, I worked for Norwegian Cruiselines for 2 years and at the auditions they don't look at anyone under 18, they won't even audition you. We did three different full length shows and one welcome aboard show. Dancing on ships was great because you don't have to work as much as the other crew at all, you do have to do a couple of other side duties though like library and gangway. We got paid about $1900 a month and it's tax free being from Canada. Room and board are free. Let's see. You'll be doing some cheesy choreography like all cruiselines, of course, but on NCL we did musical theatre shows and then two revue shows (1 broadway and 1 vegas-like).

Cruiselines come to Harbour Dance or Scotia Dance in Vancouver all the time to audition. That's how i got in. It's also good to make a video and show off everything you can do. We did alot of high kicks can-can type of stuff. good luck with it.

Hi! I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind. I'm interested in dancing on cruise ships and I was just wondering about the level of dancing/singing needed. In the audition what are the basic skills needed? How many pirouettes (like doubles, triples) are required? and how many fouettes? what other skills would be helpful in an audition, and is it hard to get accepted to audition? How many people generally audition for a spot? One last question, are you required to take care of any visa work (I am from Canada) or is that taken care of by the company? Thanks for your time! I hope you write back =)

im 17 now and still in highschool. Ive had a few teachers and friends dance on these ships before. When i get out of school thats what i'd like to do aswell. Ive heard some great things about them but ive also heard some bad things too. Living quarters was a major one and also weight requirement!!! 2 of my teachers who were with differnt cruis lines said they had regular weigh-ins and one said that some of her fellow dancers (herself included) were required to loose weight whyle on the ship! it was approximatley 5 lbs, but still! apparently this is common?!? I want to know about your experiences and such on this topic aswell as what sort of requirements and things they are looking for. Are they looking for mostley technique, stage presance or a "look" or certain ethnic background? what really. If it is technique what kind of requirements are needed. Ive been dancing for 13 years mostley in RAD ballet and competative jazz with modern and hiphop too. I however am not a tapper. Will this be a problem? if you have anyadvice or answers to these questions they would be greatley appreciated!

Thanks for the detailed info on being a cruise ship dancer. This is something I definitely want to persue. I am just waiting to see what happens in Oct. with an upcoming hip hop production team audition. Do the cruise ships generally audition at a cetain time of year? Do their contracts usually cover certain months of the year, like a school year or calendar year?
I appreciate you sharing your time and experience.

I know of a few programs that offer the opportunity for young dancers (yes, under 18 mostly) the opportunity to dance on cruise ships. They are not all equal, as only one of the three I know of is actually run by a dancer. The one I have worked with is called "Dancin' at Sea" ( wingsnwaves.com . . .)
The owner Robin Smith is a former gymnast and dancer herself. The dance group performs ON STAGE during times where there really IS an audience, and with a professional sound and light technician. The shows I have seen have all been awesome. It makes a difference when a professional dancer is in charge.
If you are serious about dancing on a cruise ship, this is an excellent way to "try it on" to see if you like it first.
