What do they suggest at his school? |

Bike shorts and plain t-shirt is likely a good combination. Ask the teachers what they want. |

I think it's probably best to ask his ballet teacher. A tight fitting white tee shirt or leotard with black shorts, white socks and white ballet shoes to start is appropriate for a young boy. Check with the teacher as some schools require tights as part of the uniform |

Because he is so young, the teacher probably won't be too strict about what he wears. But keep in mind that in ballet, it's all about the lines, so some teachers like their students to wear tight clothing so they can see better. So just to be safe, I would ask the teacher |

Follow the school regulations or requirements usually found on a printed sheet provided by the school or ask the instructor but what you described sounds like it might work. Again it all depends. |

Good for you for supporting your son in dance. I wish I'd had that! |

I, too, have a young son starting ballet. His school suggests black shorts, tee and ballet shoes. What do boy ballet shoes look like? I've Googled and only see pink ones or black ones with bows. My guy doesn't want that string bow. Is there another option. Someone mentioned white shoes and socks. Where does one find white shoes?
Also, I read about ballet belts for males. Does this apply to an 8-year old boy? He wears boxers. What type of undergarment does he need.
Thanks for any advice! |

There really isn't much difference between men's and women's flat ballet shoes. The bow isn't really meant to be seen, it is part of the drawstring and you either tuck it in or knot it and cut the ends off (be cautious- rethreading the string is almost impossible if you pull it out). I've seen a few advanced shoes that have elastic instead of the drawstring but they would not be suitable for a beginner. Look for something with a full sole. Canvas is cheaper (if you can find full sole canvas) but leather will last longer. |

At first, I thought "what's the big deal" about bows on shoes. I mean, almost every shoe in the world has a bow, right? But then I Googled images for "sneakers boys" and found that --- lo and behold --- these days, sneakers are marketed to boys without visible bows. Must be something new since I was a kid.
Do they really wear it to school like that, without tying the laces?
Anyway, it's true... bows that show on the shoes are bad form. They should be tucked in.
Boxers won't work under tights, get briefs. He's too young for a dancebelt. |

He is Too young for a dance belt. I would NOT recommend wearing boxers under tights. WEAR BRIEFS instead. I would also recommend wear white ballet shoes ( Fullsoles).
I am also a ballet dancer

My son is 8, he's been dancing since 5. As a beginner, it was really anything goes - the studio doesn't want to do anything to discourage the boys! Now (he's in Ballet II) the boys are expected to wear black bottoms (NO pockets) and a white t-shirt. Although, my son has a couple of pairs of tights from Saut de Basque (crazy prints) and he is allowed to wear those. Most of the boys wear jazz/yoga type pants or black basketball/soccer shorts. Shoes are the "normal" black or white ballet shoes, the bows (or whiskers, as I call them) go in a simple overhand knot and then are cut and tucked in. |

It depends on how strict the dance school is with regards to uniform. I know some schools that have set uniform and colours for both boys and girls for different classes ie ballet, tap etc. I would suggest you consult the teacher first. Generally I would say black leotard and tights with perhaps shorts? |

Ask his teachers at the ballet school. In my opinion, a 7 year old starting ballet should wear a tight fitted white shirt, black shorts, white socks, and white ballet shoes. |
