Travel Melbourne, Australia from June to September? en>fr fr>en By DancingBeaner Comments: 2073, member since Wed Feb 02, 2005On Sun Nov 13, 2011 01:15 AM
Hi there,
So my friend has just moved to Melbourne, Australia for a year on a working holiday visa.
I am debating on whether I should continue with my original plans of returning to Germany and travel around Europe some more in the summer months, or go to Australia and visit my friend? I am aware that it would be the winter in Australia, so I am wondering if it would be worth it to potentially waste my summer on bad weather in Melbourne.
So could anyone please let me know what the weather is really like in Melbourne from June to September? 6 Replies to Melbourne, Australia from June to September? |

June and July in Melbourne are cold months. We have sunny days, but they're usually cold regardless. August is the crossover between winter and spring, and this year we had a bunch of warm, sunny days in late August, which was very pleasant. September is generally pleasant as well, but as it's the official start of spring, can be a bit changeable. Spring in Melbourne is a fairly changeable season, but generally that comes along later in Spring, late October to November.
I think you should come. Melbourne is a great city, and even in the winter there is LOADS to do. It doesn't snow here, which means that going out on a cold night isn't as discouraging as it would be if you had to trudge through 3 feet of snow.

We went to Melbourne for 3 weeks in August/September 2006 and the weather was actually quite pleasant even though it is the Winter in Australia. The mornings/evenings were quite cold, but the actual daytime wasn't too bad. I'm from the UK so we're not used to hot summers, so the Ozzie winter was just like that really haha.
My Auntie when she moved to Australia got badly sunburnt in the Ozzie winter! She told us people thought she was CRAZY for going to the beach in winter, but it was just like UK summer for her, so they went all the time!

Hey guys,
Thanks for your comments! You have definitely made me look into other aspects of Melbourne, other than the beaches and it does seem like a really interesting city! I'm not too sure when I will decide; but it looks like I will be happy either way!
Thank you! |

Melbourne's not great for beaches. All our suburban beaches are in Port Phillip Bay which isn't the cleanest, nicest water in the world. If you want to visit beaches in Melbourne it's actually best to go out of the city, down the coast, either west along the Great Ocean Road towards Torquay, Ocean Grove or Apollo Bay or down south-east through Gippsland to Wilson's Promontory or Lakes Entrance. But it's VERY cold on the coast in the winter, especially when the wind is blowing straight in off the Antarctic.
Winter in Melbourne is all about theatre, ballet, dance, dining, music, and so on. Open fires, hot cider, and big comfy sofas

Oh that is good to know! Thanks! I was wondering if maybe you had any idea where one could get computer/ internet access in the city? My friend lives in Parkville specifically and doesn't have a computer and he isn't able to use his iPod as there is no wireless where he lives. I know this is kind of a far fetched question, but chatting/ email would be way cheaper than calling.
If you have any ideas we would be really thankful! |

There's wireless in the Starbucks across from Flinders station..
I live further down on the Mornington Peninsula, and we have a few beaches around, granted no decent waves, but there's sand and ocean. If you get a good day it's not so bad on the beach during those months.
I think the Great Ocean road would be worth a visit regardless of the weather.
I'm originally from Canberra and the thing I notice most about Melbourne winters is it is often overcast and drizzly.
I guess it's more a question of what you want to do/get out of your travels. 3-4 months is a long time to spend in one city.. Although if you were to do a stop off via the Gold Coast or, even, Bali or similar, you might get more from your trip, and still appreciate some nice weather. |
