Modern Dance - General Is it too late to start modern dancing in you late teens? en>fr fr>en By MaddieKim Comments: 1, member since Sun Nov 13, 2011On Sun Nov 13, 2011 08:29 PM
I'm 17 now but when i was about 10 I started modern dancing. I did it for a couple of years but i gave up after a while.
Just recently maybe 2 years ago i started hip hop and break dancing. Dancing has completely took over my life i love it more than anything. I put my mind to everything i learn in dance but recently i was at an audition for something and the choreography was very modern/contemporary style and i found it difficult to pick up.
I want to start modern dance again and be really serious about it. I've learned that just hip hop is not enough to get me to where i want to be.
Is it too late for me to start modern again?
any help and opinions are much appreciated!

Of course it's not too late
You're not that old and you have other dance experience.
I was at college with beginner dancers who were older than you who went on to dance professionally.
Go for it! |

Not to late to start modern (or anything ever in life really) its all about your attitude and willingness to learn. I started Modern at 18 and I am one of the younger ones in my class. |

I know you probably didn't want this as an answer, but...
You are never too old to start any kind of dance!!
it's the truth, and since you really want to be serious about dance, it would be a great idea to start modern |

Of course it's not too late, but you should also have realistic expectations. Very few people support themselves solely from dance - even people who've taken ballet, tap, jazz & modern their entire lives. I too know people who started late and went on to dance professionally, BUT most of those people (myself included) still only danced part-time. Very few modern companies employ a lot of full-time dancers. Most modern companies are either part-time or pickup (freelance). So it's not too late to start, but you shouldn't start if the only reason you want to do it is because you want to be a professional dancer. That MAY happen, but even if it does, you will almost certainly need a separate career to help pay your bills. |

Its never too late to start dancing!! Modern is probably one of the best types of dance to have fun with. It is good for all ages. I use it to dance and pour out emotion. I hope you begin to dance modern(: |

The late teens are actually a very desirable age to embrace modern dance because there is a cerebral element that is better communicated when you are more mature.
Will you make a living at it? Unlikely. Even professionals who train all their lives and have connections, exceptional talent, and great luck, are unlikely to make a living at dance. That said, there are many more important reasons to dance. For most of us, we dance because we must. We are complete when we dance, happy when we dance well, and miserable when we can't dance.
If you have the means, and opportunity to dance by all means take it. As for motive...if it speaks to you, listen. If you look at it as a possible career choice, reconsider.

No! I started about a year ago and I love it! Just go for it. If you have the right teacher you can do anything. |
