Hey everyone!

So this year, I seem to have gotten stuck with kids at that 'awkward' phase. The age group for my beginner/intermediate class is 10-14, which is a problem because A) its a large range of ages and body sizes and B) they're all at different levels of ability. For the most part, technique is shaky, and some have absolutely no concept of coordination. There are a few who definitely show potential though. I know what to work on technique wise with them, and we spend every class working on flexibility, strength, kicks, basic turn preps and single pirouettes, and some simple leaps. Also, most are only taking this 45 min class once a week, and some take one ballet class in addition. So, I understand that miracles are not going to happen given the circumstances. However, onto my question: I have to choreograph a recital dance for these girls that is somewhat mature yet technically simple. I've never really had a class of this diversity before, so I'm a little stumped. On one hand, they can really only handle very basic steps (which may work for the younger ones), but I'm afraid it will just look silly because the older few girls are taller than I am. I am already planning on picking a song that requires personality in addition to technique, because I think they will (hopefully) be able to perform well, and I will also probably divide choreo into separate groups for at least part of their dance. I could just really use some advice on what kind of angle to take on this! Thanks to anyone who read this all!

It's in my experience that audiences (especially dance recital audiences who are there to love and adore the dancers) prefer a simple, clean dance over a technically challenging and messy dance.

It's also in my experience that with this age group teachers are more likely to "over choreograph" rather than under. Give them steps that they do well and spice them up by using various choreographic elements. This age group can handle cannons, using different facings, or groups doing opposing choreography.

Sure, feel free to use a few different groups and let those more advanced dancers show off some of their accomplishments. But rather than challenging the entire group technically, ask them to step up performance quality wise. If they can learn to project and dance fully, they will be able to take those skills with them in future years when they are capable of performing more advanced skills.

I agree with the above post. Stick with what they know best. The audience really doesn't care if they can do switch leaps or triple pirouettes. If they look like they are having fun and work together as a group they will be fine. Do some formation changes and cannons to spice it up. Good Luck!

I agree with both previous responses and have been in your shoes!

I had a large class last year with ages 10-16 and whoa is there a difference!!!

I agree that simple choreography executed well is far more impressive than tricks that are a mess, but, to give your more advanced students some time to shine, you may want to consider doing some transition work in your piece. Such as, having the more advanced students start on-stage and bring some more difficult choreography for them and when the younger ones join in, simplify it a bit.

I also had a teacher when I was younger who would 'share' a song with two classes so, I think it is possible to showcase the talents of everyone.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes!!

I have had classes do no more than five steps in an entire dance. I change the combination of them, formations, etc. I work on clean lines, timing, arms and stage presence. They are a hit and look good.

Use combinations that you teach in class, in your dances. It makes it easier for them to get it.
