It depends on the studio. Some studios offer modern classes for toddlers isadoraduncan.org . . . Other studios require a foundation in ballet and jazz before allowing students to take modern. |

(I'm assuming this portrays to you)
It also depends how serious you are. Since you asked about competitions, you probably are fairly serious....I can't really say an age for modern, as I don't know you history in dance, and how old you are (I understand if you don't want to post that on the internet)
But it really varies between studios, so your best be would be to look around and see if you can find out how old you must be |

I think most studios start teaching modern around 10-13. Most studios require a knowledge of ballet before letting students particiapte in modern. |

Definitely depends on the studio. I began modern training at age 14, after years and years of ballet. Of course, I still continue to take both modern and ballet. My studio starts teaching modern as young as age eight.
As for competitions, there is a warped perspective of what modern dance actually is. Most competitions have modern categories, but you will most likely find some lyrical/contemporary solos instead of solos that fully project Graham, Horton, Limon, etc. technique. If a competition has a modern category, they probably open it up to all ages. |
