So I've been looking at a whole heap of songs lately, thinking about which ones I'd like to cover, and so I've been looking up the lyrics for the first time.
Now, has that been an eye-opener!
With a few of the songs, I've been very surprised to see what the lyrics actually are as opposed to what my teenage (or younger) self thought they were. I mean, who knew that Walk this World by Heather Nova was full of euphemisms?
What songs have you discovered later in life to be a little more naughty than you previously though?

Not really sexy, but I didn't get just how malicious Norwegian Wood was until I was into my mid twenties.

When I was a kid my favorite song was Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal band. Very catchy and cheerful and I had no idea it was about sex LOL! |

The obvious one for me - Turning Japanese by the Vapours.
On the too naive to know scale, I completely missed that Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie (or anything else he did Major Tom-wise) was completely about a smacked out Space Junky. Still love all his songs, though. |

"It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy
Again, sounds pretty obvious, but it came out when I was in 4th grade. I guess my mind just wasn't attuned to those sort of things! |

My Sharona by The Knack. I was young when this came out so I didn't realize how dirty it was.
If You Seek Amy by Brittany Spears. TOTALLY didn't understand this when it first came out. |

When I was about 8 or 9, I loved Mambo No. 5. Slightly inappropriate.... |

It isn't sexy, but still kind of funny. My dad was always kinda big on blues music, and as kids, we all used to LOVE Willie McTel's 'Southern Can is Mine".
It wasn't until years later as a near teenager when I was listening to the White Stripes cover that I realised is actually pretty nasty violent song! I'm 90% sure its about a pimp keeping a prostitute in line with violence? Either way, I now understand why Mum used to get mad when Dad let us dance around to it.
www.youtube.com . . .
I used to really love Machine Gun Fellatio when I was probably too young too, as well. My 7th grade drama teacher had to tell me what 'fellatio meant after I bought in one of their earlier (and dirtier) albums. I was so embarrassed. I just thought they sounded funny! I blame my older sister for that one. |

I agree with the other songs, "Mambo No. 5" and "Wasn't Me" lol
I was about 11 when "Barbie Girl" came out. We danced to it that year, and I didn't notice how blatantly sexual it was until hearing it years later!
Alanis Morrissette's "You Oughta Know" was another one. I loved the song but couldn't figure out why my mom wouldn't let me buy her CD when I was 8 or 9 lol |

Same with me! Haha. I was listening to it very closely on the radio a couple weeks ago and I was like, "Wow. Just wow." |

Oh god. My Sharona. I was 18 when I actually carefully listened to this song and I was like "touch of a younger kind? say what now?" |

I just googled the lyrics to these ancient songs:
1) "Blue Finger Lou" by Anne Murray
2) "Boogie Shoes" by KC and the Sunshine Band
3) "That's the Way I Like It" by KC and the Sunshine Band
4) "Mony Mony" by Tommy James and the Shondells
I'm sure you've all caught onto the sexual undertones too of "Billie Jean" and "The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson. |

"Ride the train" by Quad City DJ'S. I was in middle school when it came out. I had NO IDEA what the true meaning was. I don't know if my mom did either, I was raised VERY sheltered. |

It's not about sex but Pumped Up kicks totally threw me off once I really listened to the lyrics. I thought it was going to be about kick $&# shoes! |

I know that now. It wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I worked it out, LOL.
Oh, Peter Gabriel. You minx.
