As it is the holiday season, let's chat about our favorite pies! This came to mind because I just made a sweet potato pie and it's baking and smelling yummy!
I always make a buttermilk pie for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also do the traditional pumpkin and pecan. (And it's puh-cahn, not pee-can! Got it??) There was also an apple, a lemon meringue and a Black Forest pie (which is to die for!)
Wax rhapsodic about your favorite pies, share recipes and let's drool some.

I love making a classic homemade pumpkin pie. I've never bought a pumpkin and made my own filling that way, but I do make the pie crust and all the other stuff and it's delicious every time.
My Mom hosted a Thanksgiving dinner one year and made 5-6 different types of pie. Apple, Pumpkin, Chocolate and Walnut, Lemon Meringue, and something else I believe...
I like pie! |

I have to make sweet potato pie at work sometimes and I can not stand the smell of it! It is pretty popular among people though.
My favorite is raspberry pie. Yumm!! And Pumpkin pie with a bit of rum in there to help with flavor. Lemon meringue pie is another favorite of mine. I make it with mostly lemon though as that is my favorite part |

^ That's a good point! I don't like a great big meringue. I prefer just a little and actually, I'd rather have whipped cream than meringue.

Hate sweet potato. Hate buttermilk. Hate pecan (although my mother makes a REALLY thin pecan tart that's great - but without most of the goop). Hate meringue on pies (love meringue cookies, but on pies, BLECH!).
I don't think I've ever had lemon meringue pie though. I guess I must have, but I don't remember it. I grew up within spitting distance of the Florida keys, so we always had key lime pie which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. But that comes with whipped cream unless some damn yankee is making it. FYI - it's also yellow not green.
My grandmothers used to make mostly peach, apricot, blackberry, and black raspberry pies. Love them all - ESPECIALLY if they're fried. Also apple which is always delicious but too common to seem special. Same with pumpkin. Love it but meh. |

French Silk Chocolate. I know you're not supposed to use raw eggs anymore, but it's worth it even if we risk getting sick. No one's gotten sick so far, so we'll continue to live dangerously.
Just thinking about it makes me want to make one.
French Silk Chocolate Pie
1 stick of butter
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1-1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs
Whip butter and slowly cream in sugar and cocoa. Add eggs one at a time, beating until fluffy after each addition. Add vanilla and beat well.
Spread mixture in prepared 8" pie shell. I prefer home made pastry but in a pinch I've used Keebler Chocolate cookie crumb and everyone liked it.
Refrigerate 2-4 hours before serving. I know it's risky (with the eggs) but I refrigerate it over night and it's even better.

I've never even heard of buttermilk pie! I absolutely love key lime pie, but I'm a Yankee so I don't put whipped cream on it. The best pie I've ever had was a pear-cranberry pie I used to get at a farmer's market in Bethesda, MD. I don't live near there anymore so I really must try to recreate it one of these days. |

I, too, hate seeing green key lime pie. It is suppose to be off-white almost yellow. I am not a huge pie fan, but I always loved my grandmas fresh rhubarb pie with a bit of vanilla ice cream. I would get her recipe, but making pie is too much of a chore for me. |

Oh you all are making me hungry for my Meme's (Grandma) blueberry pie. It is delicious, but not my favourite kind over all. That place of honour goes to Strawberry Rhubarb pie. The combination is awesome. I have recently discovered that Activia Yoghurt makes a strawberry rhubarb flavour, and I am addicted to it.
I wish I could share a recipe with all of you, but sadly I have never made either of these pie's, or any other pie for that matter. Hmmm maybe when I go home for christmas I can get a pie making lesson? |

OMG, rhubarb pie! I never had that til I married a yankee! I have so been harrassed for marrying outside the southern faith but that rhubarb pie of my MIL's was worth all of it! I miss her.
My buttermilk pie is the BEST. Even people who don't usually like buttermilk or chess pie rave over it.
I am eating a slice of my sweet potato pie right now and it is dee-lish!

I've never had or heard of buttermilk pie. Is it kind of like a custard pie?
I don't really love pie, I'm more of a cake girl. I like fruit crumbles better than pie too, but I do like rhubarb a lot though you can't get that in Phoenix. Sometimes you can find strawberry rhubarb, but its just not the same. I like key lime and I put whip cream on it, and Boston Creme. Lemon meringue is yummy too if the lemon isn't overpowering (and I LOVE lots of meringue.) |

It's kind of my secret recipe, it's a cross between custard and chess and of course, I use real vanilla from Mexico, not that fake crap they sell in the stores here. And I like real whipped heavy cream (not cool whip or that can spray, blerg).

My favorite pie EVER is banana split pie. It is banana pudding with banana slices in it, then a layer of strawberry pudding, topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, and finished off with a cherry on top. I MISS IT!! I can't get another one until February or March and I'm quite sad about that. |

I've never heard of it either and since kk's is a secret, I checked it out on line. There were at least five slightly different recipes on this site alone and a few variations on the pear/cranberry combination.

There are so many variations on the buttermilk pie recipe!
Welllll.... maybe I'll share my recipe, if you all say pretty please. I guess that could be my Christmas present to you all!
Question: Who makes their own pie crust? I confess, I am lazy and use premade.
