All I can tell you is that it sounds like a spell from Harry Potter.

I started getting sick of seeing it all over DDN awhile ago and not knowing how to say it, so I googled it. OK NONE of the pronunciation keys help AT ALL because even the pronunciation is in Irish or some crap. So anyway I found a website that has little sound clips and listened to some guys say some of them words I find over on the Irish boards, AND I COULD STILL NOT UNDERSTAND THEM. It doesn't help that the 2 dudes on this website don't even sound the same ya'll. Someone from DDN should upload a sound clip.

I'm fairly certain if I remember correctly from my Scottish Grandma's Gaelic lessons it would be pronounced eer-uhkh-tuhs or oor-uhkh-tuhs? Right?

Of course Scots gaelic IS different from Irish.....so maybe I'm off?

O-rock-tahs? I remember reading on here once how you remember the spelling is by the mnemonic "Oh I 'reach' to a star."

ps I can't pronounce it either.

O-rock-tas. That's how I've always said it.

Air-ruck-thus depending on your Irish accent and where you're from but my father always said Oeir (like ear with an O sound to start)-rhuch-tus and I feel that is more accurate.

If I am a gaeilge speaking Irish American immigrant can I still apply?

That post title made me laugh so hard! Definitely had a double-take there when I first saw it.

(Glad I wasn't the only one here who read it like that...)

I've never known the correct pronunciation for Oireachtas, so in my head it's always just O-ruk-us.
