I was just wondering if someone can answer this question for me:
Under what group does the compound 6-hydroxymethyl-5,6-dihydropyran fall under?
I am thinking an alcohol because it has the hydroxyl group, but does the double bond take precedence making it an alkene?
Here is a picture of it.. except instead of an OEt group there is a CH 2OH group sticking out...

I would say that it's an alcohol, but it also has an ether, it's cyclic and unsaturated. If you're just going for one category though, I would go with alcohol. |

I think alcohol is reserved only for things with -OH groups. The -OEt is not EtOH (not sure if you were confused on that, or if this makes sense to you). I'd vote for classifying this as an ether rather than alcohol. It is also an acetal, so you could call it that too.
Edit-- I think I misread your original post. Are you saying that in place of the -OEt group in the picture, you have EtOH? If that's the case, then it's an alcohol. |

Mendel-
Yes, in place of the -OEt group in the picture there is actually a CH2OH group.
So then I will stick with it being an alcohol.
Thanks for your help Mendel and Mandakp!! |
