So I am doing only a few handmade items for family members/friends for Christmas this year out of materials I already have. One friend of mine loves Hello Kitty, not my cup of tea really but if I do say so myself this has come out nicely so far, considering finding a pattern is next to impossible so I had to really improvise with partial patterns that I found.

Anyway I now have this square, the outside border is granny-squareish. Ok so actually not a square, and that is kind of the problem, because the face is not a perfect circle, it is actually 6" wide x 5" tall. This is all I have, as is, it is basically nothing, and I need to make it into something. At first I thought maybe a pillow? I could build the border out somehow, attach felt as the back panel and stuff a square-ish pillow in it. My usual go to is a scarf, but we live in Florida, and honestly it wouldn't get used much.

I currently have gray, magenta and black yarn of the same type in large quantities. Any other ideas would be great!

(try to ignore the pen marks on the face, it will wash out, the eyes were the most annoying thing ever to try to get them matched up and even)

I would sew it onto a plain cushion or pillow, slip stitching around the edge would make it secure.

Obviously, I would make this into a thong.

My first thought was that it'd make such a cute small purse or little bag to put in your purse. I would make a back for it, line it with a separate material (maybe something synthetic that could withstand perhaps a make-up spill or something?), and then either attach a zipper or a little tie closure or a button closure.

But would hooray4jj have anything to put in said thong or are you just after a crocheted Hello Kitty thong?

Come on now own up!

Who wouldn't love to own a hello kitty banana hammock? I'd wear it to mow the yard... to the beach... to do a little power walking.

Well Panic as soon as I am done with this one, shoot me your measurements and I will start on a thong for you.

I thought a little purse might be too... juvenile for a 26 year old? I don't know. The idea to make it like a ummm make up case. or really large coin purse is a good idea though. Only problem is I HATE working with zippers and things might fall out of a button closure. I will have to work with that idea more in my head and see if I am talented enough to sew in a lining and such.

This is bringing back some long repressed memories. I used to have a neighbour who would mow the lawn in a thong speedo...This was the sort of person who should have been banned from wearing speedo's of any kind :/

I'm sure I'm going to have nightmares tonight!

I would have said a bag, but I can't see how big your square is. A make up case/bag is a nice idea. I'm with you about zips, so I go to op shops (thrift stores?) and buy cheap second hand bags and re-cover or embellish.

Oh neat! I saw that pattern ages ago, and really wanted to try it, but I didn't know anyone who likes hello kitty to give it to.

I like the idea of the purse. If she's the kind of 26 year old who loves hello kitty, she's probably wouldn't find it too juvenile. I would, however, make it into a largish shoulder bag. The size that's right for a day at the park, or beach, rather than taking to work or a night out.

You could either keep repeating the granny-square edging till it's big enough, or make 1 or 3 more squares, and make a checkerboard pattern with regular granny squares (or rectangles). Add a longish croched shoulder strap, and a fabric lining, and you're all set. That size of bag wouldn't require a zipper.

You could also use the same method, and add an accent pillow inside instead of the shoulder strap. Because of the size of the holes in the crocheting, I would put a covered pillow inside, not just pillow stuffing.

Alternatively, if you're a fast crocheter, you could whip up the rest of a lap-afghan in granny squares, and use this one as an accent.

Agreed, if I did a pillow it would definitely be an actual pillow, not stuffing, although I am worried about finding one that would fit the rectangular shape. I am nervous about the idea of trying to make granny square (rectangles) to stitch together, as I am not confident that I could get them to be the same size as this one so I think I will play with just extending the border as you mentioned. Then I will reevaluate to see if it looks good.

Perhaps you could line it with fabric and sew it onto a store-bought tote bag as a pocket? If you're ambitious, you could make the tote bag yourself too. I'd be interested to see pictures of the finished item, whatever you decide to do!

^ yes also a good idea! Good thing I still have time until Christmas, because I haven't decided quite yet. I played around with a border, but I don't like how holey it is. My mom just actually suggest a pocket too, she thought maybe lining it and sewing onto an apron. My friend loves to bake, so that is what I am going to look into now!

If the yarn is not acrylic, it's the perfect size for a potholder (or hotpad, trivet, whatever you call them). I love, love hand made potholders! Purchased ones are never thick enough.

If it IS acrylic, that's going to be an itchy thong!

kk~
