I'm thinking I might go wigless for a competition, OR use a fashion hairpiece wig (something I can buy for under 30 dollars). I currently wear a full, extra long (about upper-mid back length) natural looking curly wig, but it's getting frizzy. It would probably only be this one feis.
Mainly, I want to travel lightly, as I will be flying and I don't want to check any bags. Any ideas how to wear my hair without a wig?
(My hair is long, about five inches past my shoulder. It's wavy and frizzy, and frizzes quite easily if I leave it down.)
Thanks! 24 Replies to Clean ways to wear hair up for competition? |

I've done this with my hair a few times for competitions (when it was dyed purple and didn't match my wig): a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net . . . (hopefully the link will work). My hair is long and wavy...and frizzes far too easily.
It's really easy to make (and I'm completely inept with hair, so it must be pretty easy!).
Use slightly damp hair.
Make a pony tail.
Divide it into three sections.
Plait each section (secure with elastics, you can take them out before you pin the ends).
Wrap each section around a bit at a time and pin lots as you go.
Hairspray.
Et voila.
Here's a video demoing how to do a non-plaited one (but it's the same construction technique), this girls hair is wayyyy longer than mine, hence the girls huge bun! www.youtube.com . . . |

I did this at my last feis. www.youtube.com . . .
It's a diagonal dutch braid with a braid rose. I added a matching flower as decoration. It was super easy and very quick. I didn't pull out my braid to make it bigger though. I kept it slightly tighter so that it would stay in while I was dancing.
You can check out some of her other hairstyles too. There are a lot of them that would look good as a feis-doo
A bunch of younger girls wore a large side bun with a flower. Scroll down through the pictures. There is a group shot of the girls with their buns. dontcrossthepickettline.blogspot.com . . .
If you are interested I could be a little more descriptive on how to make the side bun.
Going wig-less is great!! I may do it more now. Save my wig for majors... |

I've asked my mom to do my hair like this for my next feis. Looks easy enough . |

I can just image the e-mails Camelia Rose would get, since she's got all those crystal shiny flowers and bows, just because dancers want to look like rapunnzel (how do you spell her name anyway? lol)! Although, thinking about it now, a large bun wig with tons of little flowers in it would be cute! plus, aren't some dancers wearing their full wig pulled to the side now?
end hijack
I really like the braided bun thing. Very smart looking and very neat! |

I went wigless for my last feis. What I did was curl my hair (yes, slept in curlers!) except for one ponytail of hair on the top of my head. The morning of the feis:
1. I put a donut-lifter around the ponytail (after I had braided and pinned it into a mini-bun).
2. I took a hair-scrunchie, one of those hair elastics that has fake hair attached to it, to cover the donut with.
3. I took the curls closest to the donut and pinned them to the donut/fakehair bun - add lots of hairspray
4. I pinned the outermost ring of curls to the bun and then made the poof from two curls I had left over for that purpose. again, add lots of hairspray.
5. Add tiara or hairband - you might want to add the hairband after step 3 if you want to cover some of it with the outer curls.
6. Pin any loose hair into place - enjoy a wigless feis!
I know I enjoyed it thoroughly! No wig-headache
Kind regards,

^Do you perhaps have a picture of this? Sounds like a good wigless hairdo, just can't picture it very well. |

sure do, but not with me here at Uni. Will post when I get home tomorrow or Wednesday. My TC and dance friends loved it. Should have made it a big bigger, though, but that is easily done by using a larger donut than I did (quite small).
Kind regards,

Teashark- I would love it if you had a picture! As with IDaddict I'm having a bit of trouble picturing it...In my mind it ends up looking like a bun wig with with a 60'sesque pouf. I really like the braided bun look, but I also really like the "full head of hair" look of poufs and curls- i think it balances out the dresses.
Edit: Onegirlband- I didn't see your comment! I might do the braid with my hair curled to give it volume. i really like the look it it, and I think I could add a pouf if I wanted.
Hmm. Maybe I'll try doing these hairstyles and I'll upload some pictures. |

onegirlband-could you go into more detail about the side bun? It looks so nice! |

Sure thing!
Hopefully this all makes sense. If you have any questions, just let me know!
1) Put hair into a side pony tail behind the top of the ear.
2) Split the hair in the pony tail in half so that there is a top section and a bottom section.
3) Split each section into smaller 1" sections and spray with hairspray
4) Roll the section of hair around your fingers and pin near the base of the pony tail. Use two crossing bobby pins for a secure hold with each bobby pin coming from the opposite side of the roll.
5) Continue to separate smaller sections, spray, and pin in a circle around the pony.
6) Once all the sections are pinned, adjust the rolls so that it looks like a continuous roll.
7) Spray with more hairspray for an extra hold.
8) Add a decorative flower or a small sparkly head band.
If your hair is thinner or not as long, you can try using a wig doughnut. Thread the wig doughnut onto the pony tail and pin the hair sections overtop of the doughnut. |

I love the bun pulled to the side! Do you think I could wear a tiara/headband with my hair like that, or should I stick to flowers and hair crystals? |

It looks nice with a simple Alice style headband. Something like this would be cute www.johnlewis.com . . .
You can also try looking at the feis for a skinny rhinestone headband. |

I wear a bun wig that only cost $25! It still looks new after THREE YEARS! Yes, that's right. Three years. I do take really good care of it (it gets a trim before every feis). Wish I could remember who I bought it from. It was at a feis in Michigan.

MeBee, if you try things out I would really love to see pictures... I have a feis in February and I'd like to try something different from my full wig. |

I've decided I'm going to do a braided bun like the first suggestion, but I'm wearing it low to the side, like onegirlbands' dancers. I'm going to put hair crystals in the braided bun itself, and a large flower matching whatever colour my dress will be above the bun.
Please don't mind the terrible picture and editing quality. I was too lazy to make it pretty. |

Onegirlband- Haha thanks. sorry about the pictures! I had to use my webcam. My manfriend had our camera while he was at work, which just happened to be when i actually wanted it. Funny how that works out
I might tinker some more- I want to incorporate a pouf some how. |

I did the hairdo for a uni x-mas party yesterday - took photos at every stage. It is not as super-curly as my feis-hair, but gives a quite nice idea of how I do it. Will post as soon as possible!
Kind regards,

If you scroll down, here is another idea perhaps? I think it would look lovely with a flower, bow, or sparkly hairclip. www.dance.net . . . |

I like it, but I also like volume near my face. I'm still fiddling. Thank you for the suggestion, Rosalinde. I might wear my hair like that for class to try it out! |
