Ballet - Beginners It's been 3 years since I last took ballet and I'm ready to start! en>fr fr>en By aerocutie426 Comments: 3, member since Sun Dec 11, 2011On Sun Dec 11, 2011 06:54 PM
So, I have been taking ballet classes ever since I was two years old. I really loved it and tried many different types- tap, jazz, hip hop and I was on the competition team. I quit dancing when i was thirteen years old and now i really miss it. I want to go back, but I'm really nervous- new ballet studio, new country, and new body (I lost a ton of weight.) I also want to try lyrical this year. Oh, and for the first time in my life, I'm going to have to use FootUndeez- for ballet! The teacher said they used them for almost everything (except tap, hip hop, and modern) and I'm really... anxious, I guess, to use them. Any tips or things I should keep in mind? Thanks! 7 Replies to It's been 3 years since I last took ballet and I'm ready to start! |

Hi, aerocutie426.
Good for you for starting back at dancer after a long break!
What are your goals with dance right now? I think you are about 16 based on the info in your post. If you are looking to get some good ballet training, even if you are wanting to dance just for fun, I would question the quality of instruction at a studio where Foot Undeez are uniform for a ballet class. Do you know much about this studio or what type of dancers they turn out?
When is your first class? |

Well, my goals are to work on my flexibility and just get back to dancing. I've always enjoyed it and it really relaxed me. No, you see, I'm living in a different country right now and the studio is close to my house. It is very well-kept and looks respectable; I have younger cousins who take classes there. The owner said they use the FootUndeez method in order to work on your arch.
I am going to take a trial class, which would be sometime next week. I have the tights, leotards, and the FootUndeez, but I guess I'll just wait and see. |

Good luck at your trial class! I'm interested to know what your teacher is talking about when she says the "FootUndeez Method". Let us know if you find out. |

Has anyone else ever heard of this "method"?

Nope. I was always under the impression that the reason little kids and beginners are sometimes encouraged to wear full soled ballet slippers was to provide just a bit of resistance to strengthen the feet. Wearing a Foot Undeez type shoe would eliminate all resistance. Also, and I know Foot Undeez cover the ball of the foot for turning, don't you think the rest of the foot would be sticking to the floor during chassés or glissés, etc?
The only method I can think of here is that the teacher doesn't know what to look for in a foot that has a shoes covering it and she thinks she can correct better if she can see the foot? Who knows. |

I have no idea. Quite frankly, I don't know if I'll be able to dance in them. I'll do the trial class, but if it doesn't work out, I'll go to another dance academy. |
