Ok so I don't know who would pay money for this out of a catalog when you could go to Walmart.
Really the thing that got me was the video that Costume Gallery puts with their costumes online. Not to mention that they are associating it with the song "Get up off that Thing" as in by James Brown.
While we are also on the subject of Art Stone, in their Holiday catalog they have gingerbread man, snowman and tree costumes that you could never actually dance in. I assume the costume is for the poor kid that got elected to wear it while jovially prancing about the stage while everyone else dances. We had such a costume when I was in a competition group in high school, it was a handmade felt Christmas tree costume. We did a festival of trees performance every year for fun and we would always argue over who got to wear the Christmas tree, because then you never really had to learn the rest of the dance.
Forgot to add, that if you need unitards to threaten your students with, you don't need to look any further than the Cirque portion of Art Stone.
I seriously love Art Stone, I really do... just not these costumes here:

Hehehe. One of the other teachers at the studio pointed this one out and I said, "...but WHY is the leotard on the OUTside?!"
And I agree about the Walmart style costume. I don't know why you would pay costume prices for that get-up. |

^ yes that is the exact problem with that one. Of course if you ordered it I am sure you could wear the pants on the outside. |

No, because that will make the legs and belly look huge and fat. That is why the leotard is over it. To bring up and down more in balance. |

The bell bottoms on those pants look like they have metal or plastic rings at the hem. How on earth would students dance in that?
I bet the Cirque people would find a creative use for costume #2 with the wings. Love, love the foil wrap pants. You could probably sweat a lot of weight off in those babies. |

Look closely. You can see the pants through those leotards. |

I love this! Costume #2 I was seriously considering using for our "Dream" themed recital for some kind of nightmare... then saw the price and quickly changed my mind. They could have been some kind of really great nightmare!
The bell bottoms we showed to our Hip Hop 4 (most advanced level) class that always has terrible attitudes about costumes and told them we were purchasing them these costumes and they would be wearing them, including the wigs. Don't know yet when we'll show them what they've actually been ordered... maybe picture day! |

The Rainbow Brite one makes me laugh every time! Here are ones I think are crazy/ugly!
It seems that unitards get the brunt of ugliest costumes. As if anyone wearing a unitard must be doing something bizarre.... |

@ cheerspirit: The second picture? What is she supposed to be? I think the designers are confused about what constitutes a Native American costume and what a Bollywood costume is supposed to look like. The model looks thrilled. |

I saw that tutu thing and all I could think of was Jelly Fish.
Auntie," What was Dolly in the recital?"
Mum, " Second Jelly Fish in on the back row!" |

I'm pretty sure my preschoolers would love the neon green rainbow costume...thank heavens they don't get to pick their own costumes! I like the furry looking leg warmers too. LOL
I think hummingbird is right about the "jelly-fish" costume. Perfect for an "Under the Sea" ballet. |

Lol, it's from Algy and it's called "Sea Fantasies".
"One Tribe" is also from Algy. That brown/tan velvet is the worst material! |

I actually had a mom ask me to price the rainbow bright one from costume gallery you mentioned in a few posts above. She just loved it!
Um... no. |

This thread is hilarious! I found this hairy costume. I suppose if you needed to incorporate a belly dance class into a recital theme of Woodland Creatures it might work.....hahahahahah |

I have no photos to add, but honestly, since we used to have custom costumes for our dance team, we used to see versions of them, the year after, in catalogs, so I am thinking that maybe someone had already came up with the idea and they just copied some of them. Stranger things have happened.
I think, in the right concept, though I cannot think of any as I may not be creative enough, some of them might work (for space costumes, that is). |

I use a local seamstress for a lot of my costumes and I know that I've done choreography and then seen what I was looking for the next season in the catalogues. They weren't watching the small hicksville competitions I go to, it's just a case of fools thinking the twain in my case.
They think of them the same time I do and then get them into production the year after I need them, I need to be more mainstream I guess.
I'm trying that one this year, I'll let you know how it goes... |

These costumes are ridiculous for a recital, but they have a semi-logical origin--they're ripoffs of costumes from the Broadway production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Of course in the show they're bigger, better, and worn by drag queens.
