Don't laugh; it's totally possible!!! Don't you know that a certain cat is secretly enrolled in school too?!

I used to get emails for this all the time..."Get Your Degree From and Internationally Know Unaccredited University." $500 would get me a Ph.D for my "Life Experiences." I could have gotten a Masters for much less, but I already have one of those, LOL. (My MA is legit...from Johns Hopkins, I don't think that is considered a diploma mill.)

My wife had to deal with this once when as a school principal one of her teachers presented such a Master's Degree so she could jump to a Master's Degree pay scale. That decision point wasn't my wife's but rather the certification department of her school system, but my wife did recommend disapproval. For one, she got it from a bible college which had no real relevance to her job. The teacher was also a minister at a storefront church. The school system turned it down.

Many unaccredited schools are out and out scams and many have been shut down by various US States (Many though are overseas.)
There are a number of US school, mainly religious colleges, who actually have physical plants but choose to remain unaccredited on religious and separation of church/state grounds (Ironically, many of their grads are active in the Religious Right movements which definitely seek to mix religion with politics and governance.)

In my state, it is illegal to grant any diploma unless the authority is granted by the State Department of Higher Education. There was recently a very small ethnic (Korean) "School" which proclaimed itself a "university." They mostly taught Korean language and bible stuff. Some said it was an offshoot of the Unification Church (aka the "Moonies") but the school denied that. The last time I passed the place (about 5 miles from my house) it had a totally different sign and merely called itself a church. It's about the size of a three-car garage.
