 Girls Only PG-13 Am I under-reacting about this? en>fr fr>en By Coccinella Comments: 5290, member since Sat Jan 25, 2003On Thu Dec 29, 2011 01:45 PM
My period is 5 days late, and I've never been this late to get my period before. I just started my 5th pack of progestin-only birth control pills. This is the 1st and only type of hormonal birth control I've ever been on.
I took a pregnancy test when my period was 3 days late, just to put my mind at ease, and it was negative. Two days later and still no period...with no symptoms at all as indicators that it could be here any day.
My theory is that holiday stress may have pushed things back and that my complete lack of routine right now may have confused my body a bit too. My boyfriend, on the other hand, seems to be really concerned and is adamant that I see a doctor, like, now. I'm trying to tell him that there isn't much a GP would do. They would probably ask me if I've been using my BC properly, have I used condoms, any big changes to my weight/diet, etc. I don't know what he thinks they can do. They aren't going to start running tests and trying to figure anything out when a girls period is 5 days late.
My mom thinks that it's a side effect form my BC now that I've been on it for a few months. The pamphlet that comes with the pills does list changes in your period as a possible symptom.
So, should I be more worried? I really don't think I'm pregnant. My boyfriend and I only had sex a couple times last months and I think we used a condom each time. How can I get my boyfriend to relax a bit. If I still don't have my period in a few days I will probably call up my GP but I just don't think she can do anythiing for me right now. 3 Replies to Am I under-reacting about this? |

I would probably wait a week or two before getting worried. I've had late periods while on birth control as well. I would only be worried if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms like fatigue, nausea, vomiting, changes in hormones/emotions, and etc.
Once I was worried I was pregnant because I missed my period for two weeks and I was having unusual symptoms like headaches and nausea. I told my boyfriend and he was more freaked out than I was.
I think going to doctor at this point would be a waste of time if you really want to put your mind at ease buy a few pregnancy tests and take them weekly if your period doesn't show up.

I had a BC pill once for a few months that made my period completely go away. Needless to say, the first time that happened I freaked out. If you changes meds recently, it's definitely a possibility that that's what's going on. I wouldn't worry too much just yet.
I ended up not staying on that one because it messed with my hormones - and therefore my moods - a little too much. |

You are not "under-reacting". You've already done a pregnancy test and you're only a few days late. Relax.
It is very common for hormonal bc to disrupt your cycle. Relax. (sorry, I'm being redundant.)
