I read somewhere on attaching taps to a pair of split-sole jazz shoes. Has anyone ever done this who could tell me about the results?

Just buy a pair of tap shoes. In order for the taps to stay on the shoes they need nails or screws. A regular jazz shoe doesn't have the proper foundation for just adding taps.

I've seen that done and the results were disastrous. It's possible to get split soled tap shoes that look and feel a lot like jazz shoes, that's probably the best way to go.
