Ask a Judge Can you have a french manicure or false french nails in a competition? en>fr fr>en By ballet_girl510 Comments: 28, member since Sat Aug 27, 2011On Sat Jan 07, 2012 01:10 AM
I am just wondering because I know you are not supposed to wear nail polish. I have seen dancers with french manicures win titles but I want to reassure myself that it is okay before I do my nails then find out that i have to remove them. Thank you in advanced. 5 Replies to Can you have a french manicure or false french nails in a competition? |

They didn't win, or not win, the title simply because they had painted nails. They won the title because they were the best dancer and had the most points. Chances are, the judges didn't even notice that they had painted nails, and frankly, if you had enough time to notice, then you need to focus your energy onto more important things. |

^Some competitions have specific rules about costuming, including nail polish. It does depend on the dance style. I'm not certain, but I think Irish dance and ballet competitions do have rules about nail color. There was a thread a while back in the ballet boards about a principle ballerina who was orange with fake tan and had this horrible french manicure and how alien she looked on stage. And honestly, even at competitions that are jazz and lyrical heavy, if I were judging, I would be put off if I noticed a dancer's nails and that took away from their dancing.
OP, I would keep it simple. It may not hurt you to have a manicure, but one judge may have a stigma against anything but plain, clean nails on stage. Surely you can hold off until after your competition, and then maybe go get a manicure as a treat. |

Hello,
I wondered this myself. Our teacher told us no nail polish at all but I thought it just looked nice if your nails were nicely manicured. |
