My mom is going in for hip replacement surgery tomorrow, and I am getting worried and just need to vent. I absolutely HATE anesthesia and I don't trust it. The last time I had to have surgery I was so freaked out they had to sedate me before they could knock me out. And I know my mom feels the same way. We went shopping today and I could tell we were both thinking "What if this is our last day together"? Which is totally not productive thinking, I know. Anyway, I just needed to vent. I was the same way last January when she had her rotator cuff fixed, and she was fine then.

It's normal to worry *hugs* everything is likely to go smoothly. Hang in there, and best of luck!

My mom had hip replacement some 19 years ago...no option for her it was a slip and fall on the ice thing. She was 72 at the time and probably as scared as you and your mom are. Three weeks later I marched her down an aisle to get remarried (she was a widow.) She is still alive at nearly age 92. So is her husband, also 92 and actually her high school boyfriend for a while.

Be firm with your mom about the physical therapy which will follow. We have social friends who have had knee and hip replacements who were able to overcome rather debilitating arthritis. My wife may soon be a candidate for this (Doctors think "not yet.") Most people we know who have had this done say they should have had it done years ago.

It's a pretty routine operation now.

Hugs to you.

It's never easy to see someone you love go in for surgery, try to focus on how much this operation is going to make her life easier when it's done. If that's making the surgery worth the risk for your mum then it really should do it for you too.

Thanks for support :) She is definitely ready for PT. She is "only" (her words) 55 and the surgery is to fix a problem she's had since birth. She's an amature triathlete and avid cyclist, and spends 1-2 hours a day at the gym, so I know she's fit. That makes me worry a little less about the anesthesia. I wish she was going in first thing in the morning, I'll have to go through all day at work worrying since she won't be out until 2:30.

Give your mom my love.
Your mom is a strong woman and it's going to be ok. I didn't know she had hips problems, especially not with all that biking!

Miss you guys.
