We have his first Intermediate competition this coming weekend so I had to quickly make a jig outfit for my son because the one I bought a year ago is still way to big on him - I thought he would grow before he needed it. I had a bit of trouble with setting in the sleeves but it's finally finished except for some decorative buttons - probably gold ones I think. 8 Replies to New Jig Outfit |

Wow, fast sewing! The outfit looks great! It'll be nice seeing your son wearing it on Saturday.

My daughter dances her first Intermediate Jig this weekend also. I had an old Jig dress & apron given to us but the zip was broken and it had a tear in the skirt. I literally had to take it apart to put in a zipper and make a new seam in the front to hide the tear so I lined it with green to give it some contrast. The apron had no ties (was it always pinned on???) and unable to match the white I used a strip of the green to make ties - changed the red ribbon running through the eyelet to the same shade of green and it's done! Now all there is to do is for them to get through the DANCE! |

I got mine from Fabricland but anywhere they sell patterns - It's McCalls # 6143 - in the costume section. I just shortened the tails a little. |

Edited by kaytbones (207069) on 2012-01-12 11:00:02 To add hint for sleeves
Angela_a - word of advice for you: When you're measuring it to him - make sure he's wearing clothes ( a shirt etc.) on. Mine was just lounging around in PJ's before bed so I fitted it to him bare chested and it was perfect. I spent a few hours sewing after he went to bed and off to school the next day. When he tried it on with a shirt and the vest (waistcoat) it was very tight in the armholes. It's going to have to get him through this weekend and two Burns performances but I'll be making a new one quite soon! The vest is way to small so he can't wear it at all. Also - the sleeves ended up being way to short when he held them up to shillelagh so I had to add cuffs - I guess because it's just a costume pattern they don't expect you to be holding your arms up in the air. Make sure you add some extra length to the sleeves. I thought it added a little extra "pizzazz" to it with red cuffs so I'm pleased with it in the long run. |
