Baby On Board Webster Technique for breech baby, does it work? en>fr fr>en By Live4Dance Comments: 729, member since Wed Sep 22, 2004On Tue Jan 10, 2012 07:51 PM
I am currently 37 weeks pregnant, and my baby is still in a breech position. I had a vaginal birth for my daughter, and I really don't want to have a c-section if I can avoid it!
My dr is trying a ECV (external cephalic version) next Monday. I am apparently a good candidate for it, but I would love if my baby would turn more "naturally".
Of course, I tried all the home techniques (pelvis up, music, light...), nothing worked. Today, I went to see a chiropractor, he did the Webster Technique on me. According to the websites I have seen, it is something like 82% effective, but I can't find a real "scientific" study that proves it.
Did anyone try it? Did it work? Is so, how many times did you have to go before the baby flipped?
thanks for your help! 7 Replies to Webster Technique for breech baby, does it work? |

I don't have personal experience with flipping a breech, but have heard good things about Webster technique. Check out spinningbabies.com, it's a great website with recommendations for things you can do to position your baby optimally. You are lucky to have an OB who will attempt external version. It's a dying art. It's not a comfortable procedure, but may be a better option than s C-section.
Don't loose heart - I have known breech babies to turn last minute. But taking measures to ensure that the little bub turns can't hurt!
Best of luck to you. |

I'm not a mom and have never been pregnant, but my mom has told me about my sister. She was positioned correctly, then did a 180 and turned breech and stayed that way up until just before she had to start pushing. Then she flipped herself right way round. Yeah, we were fun to birth apparently. My mom had a huge bruise from my sister's head on her abdomen from where she turned around and when I was born I was sucking my thumb. Obviously I was bored in there. So instead of coming out the normal way, no I made things difficult by having my arm up across my chest and my thumb in my mouth. Babies are funny things. I wish you the best in finding a way or method to get your little turned rightside down! |

Or you could do the Friends method, and just push her harder. *facepalm* Swear, the episode where Rachel has her baby, they figure out that she's breech, and the OBs method is to push harder.
I know that doesn't help, just figured I'd give you a laugh, if nothing else... |

Babies can turn at the last min and women do give birth to perfectly healthy breech babies everyday. A lot of vaginal twin deliveries 1 of the babies is breech.
Pushing while laying on your back makes things more difficult, it compresses the pelvis making it more difficult for baby to get through. You are also fighting gravity in this position. Pushing in a squatting position or on all fours are both great for opening the pelvis allowing the baby more room on the journey out.
Check out Ina May Gaskin. She's the mother of modern day midwifing. There are clips of her teaching workshops on YouTube she also has a book called Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.
Hopefully you get the birth experience you desire, but in the end, a healthy mom and baby are the most important. Best of luck with everything, it's an exciting time! |

Just to give you some hope...
I was 38 weeks and my baby was still breech. I went to see an OB who would do breech birth to see if I could try that, and even was told that he was going to be really big - - some ultrasound estimates said 12 pounds at 37 weeks! I was told he was likely too big to turn.
Well...he turned some time between 39-40 weeks, was born at 41 weeks and was 8 pounds 7 ounces. |

Thank you all for your advice!
So, despite 3 sessions with the chiro, the baby didn't move a bit. So well, Webster Technique didn't work at all on me. All the realignment did nothing for me, I felt no different after those session...
Today, I went at the hospital to try the version (ECV) and it worked! The baby is now head down, and I am thrilled that I will be able to deliver vaginally next week.
I have a scheduled induction next Monday (@39 weeks), I have a gestational diabetes controlled with medication. Also my daughter was big 9lbs 7oz (I also had diabetes with her). We couldn't wait longer to see if the baby would turn naturally, we had to schedule either a c-section or an induction for next week. |

Yay! Best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery and baby.
Good luck with the induction too...that can be rough, I was just there 4 months ago. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way. |
