General Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By ShandaLee Comments: 2605, member since Sat Nov 30, 2002On Mon Jan 23, 2012 11:32 AM
I'm from Canada (don't want to specify where), and people in my city have been hearing this "strange noise" the past few nights at around 11:30 pm. Some say it sounds like trumpets, some say it just sounds like a snow plow/bull dozer type thing. I figured people are losing their minds. Or playing tricks on other people.
Last night my daughter woke up just after 11 and we were snuggling in my bed. I could hear someone plowing our street outside, which didn't seem weird to me because alot of times the city plows late at night so as not to be in the way of traffic. My boyfriend came home from nights in the morning and he asked if I had heard about this "noise" people are talking about and I said I had heard and we both agreed it was silly.
About an hour ago I realized my road is not plowed. And neither are the ones around it. So maybe I heard it? I still don't know what to believe. I googled this "noise" thing and apparently it's been all around the world at different times. They say it could be the north pole shifting, spacequakes, or you know, aliens.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has heard this?
Here is a video of the noise (not from my city, but still from Canada):

I can't find the exact site I looked at this morning, but you guys can google it if you need to. 28 Replies to Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By Heart Comments: 14492, member since Thu Feb 14, 2002On Mon Jan 23, 2012 12:20 PM
THAT IS SO TRIPPY.
Do you have any links to news stations reporting on it? I found this on Huffpost, but it just talks about the videos posted, and if it's just that it sounds like a hoax, definitely. But people are actually hearing it, you're saying?
This reminds me of other stories about hearing unidentified strange noises,, but the one I linked to (termed "the Hum") is definitely very low-frequency and is background noise, like white noise, almost.
If that video is real it's scary as hell. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By Megan Comments: 12307, member since Wed Mar 17, 2004On Mon Jan 23, 2012 12:36 PM
I read last week that it's apparently a viral marketing campaign. You know, street team kinda thing. I don't remember where I saw it, but that seems to be the prevailing thing (combined with idiots jumping on the bandwagon.) Some of the "strange sounds" videos have identical soundtracks, and some of them match sounds from movies exactly as well. I think it's a combination of people deliberately trying to start panic, bandwagon-hoppers, and the power of suggestion. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By ShandaLee Comments: 2605, member since Sat Nov 30, 2002On Mon Jan 23, 2012 01:11 PM
One girl I know heard it last night and recorded it and put it on her Facebook. And There are a few videos on youtube from my town from others hearing it. My mom said her boss was talking about it at work today saying that he heard it too. I work a night shift tonight, so I'm going to try and keep an ear out, and maybe if I hear it I'll try and record it. I'm hoping it's just a hoak, because if it isn't, that's a scary noise to be hearing.
From what I can see, there isn't anything in the news on this nearby, my boyfriend said he heard or saw some from overseas maybe? I really don't have a lot of info on it. Guess could google news reports. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By hooray4jj Comments: 1939, member since Sun Jun 20, 2004On Mon Jan 23, 2012 01:32 PM

There are so many theories, it is pretty interesting.
This being one of them en.wikipedia.org . . . basically research that was done with the ionosphere? And radios? Or something? You can see the website here www.haarp.alaska.edu Oh I just found this clip that explains HAARP better than anything I have read www.youtube.com . . . (thanks History Channel!)
Others are saying that it is a clip from the movie Red State. You can watch a clip here www.youtube.com . . . but just know that it is also a violent scene in the movie. I have the clip starting just after some of the violence though, so just watch it for about 15 seconds
Oh yeah and then there is this guy www.youtube.com . . . Trumpets of Revelation?
This is a good compilation of a lot of the videos www.reality-choice.org . . .

Viral marketing campaign for Half Life 2 - Episode 3. It's a super popular video game that doesn't have a release date yet. Here's a Youtube video of some ambient noise from the game, compare that to these videos from around the world: www.youtube.com . . .

Oh my god, that is SO CREEPY. Clearly some prehistoric, supernatural creature that lives in the earth is really pissed right now. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By YumYumDoughnut Comments: 6532, member since Sat Jul 10, 2004On Mon Jan 23, 2012 06:29 PM
I wouldn't say I buy into this whole "strange noise" thing, but I have heard some strange noises recently. It sounds pretty similar to the one in the clip, but we also had a storm recently. I just thought some metal was being thrown around outside of something....creepy eh? | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? (karma: 1)

Well I'm just, you know, going to go hide in my bed with all of the lights on and try NOT to have nightmares about that one... Holy moly. That's freaking creepy. Yup. Haven't heard it *knocks on wood*, and I really don't want to. If that's real, it's really creepy. And disturbing. o.O | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By sjerose Comments: 994, member since Thu May 11, 2006On Tue Jan 24, 2012 07:34 AM
I'm a killjoy. It's viral marketing for something for sure, because why aren't there more mainstream news stories about it, and why are there so few videos popping up from these heavily populated areas?
Here's an article with a video demonstration of the instrument used to make these sounds:

^ It's not really an effective viral marketing campaign if no one knows what they are trying to market. There have been a few news reports about it but nothing substantial.
Here is a forum where some different people (including some audio engineers) chime in on how it could be faked/is faked and also a man who works for a Petroleum Co saying it sounds like pressure being released from an O&G well. www.godlikeproductions.com . . .
I know that we were getting some really creepy sounds at night here in the SF Bay area. It sounded like a low, slow intense rumbling. I mentioned it to a few other people who had heard it and we were all mildly disturbed. A few months later someone told me it was the sound of road workers using a massive stone drill to drill an additional road tunnel in hills not more than 10 miles away. They did the work at night to reduce daytime traffic and delays. The distance (and the fact that I had never heard the sound of a tunnel boring machine) distorted the sounds and made them really creepy to me. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By ShandaLee Comments: 2605, member since Sat Nov 30, 2002On Tue Jan 24, 2012 01:11 PM
Well, I didn't hear it last night. :/ But people from a neighboring city claim to have heard it.
The new thing flashing around Facebook is that the HAARP project is causing it:

Ok, so after reading all those debunking links people posted, the strange noises are probably (hopefully!) fake, even if still really really creepy. Anyway, I just wanted to share that I just completely freaked out because I was in the middle of reading this thread when I nearly jumped out of my skin because I heard a really loud and creepy sound all of a sudden... and then about two seconds later I realized it was my phone vibrating against my metal waterbottle. Sigh. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By sjerose Comments: 994, member since Thu May 11, 2006On Tue Jan 24, 2012 04:07 PM
In an ARG-style viral marketing campaign, usually it starts out with a fabricated phenomenon meant to draw people in as a point of curiosity. Once people are good and intrigued (as clearly we are), then later stages will slowly reveal the end product (movie, video game, etc.) the ARG is trying to draw attention toward. It's called a "stealth launch". This is a perfect example, and now that we're all good and piqued, we just have to wait until they decide to take it to the next stage.

My friend and I were talking about this and watching the videos last night, and we concluded that he thinks that the noises are actually being played and heard by the people in the videos. None of the tracks match up exactly, the sound isn't exactly the same in any two videos (which would make sense as the noise would be different depending on how far you are from it). The audio is fairly decently matched up (particularly in the ones where someone is talking over the noise). He suggested that if it is a viral marketing campaign, someone is playing the sounds in all these different locations.
I suppose it could be an audio overlay, but takes some talent to pull off and match to the video. Plus - to edit the sound to be different every time? Possible, but these would have to be people who know what they're doing, and I'm getting the sense that they're not.
If someone is just playing the sound very loudly somewhere... that's very illegal. Or at least, it would be in the US. Noise violations and all that. So if that's what it is... the company is going to be in deep doo-doo.
I think the most likely scenario is that it's just hoaxers. A subset of Anonymous somewhere deciding to play into 2012 fears. Would also be why it's international...
Yeah really I have no idea. This is fun though! I concur with the Redditor who says that we should boycott whatever game/film this is for. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? (karma: 1)

Holy Shiznit. While I am pretty skeptical, that IS pretty darn creepy. And I don't get creeped out/scared easily.
*Shudder* Oi, that is going to take a while to get out of my head before bed LOL Thank goodness my cat is a massive cuddler, gonna need it.
I live in Canada myself, but never heard of anything of these noises before (Then again maybe I'm just behind, har har) The latest news I got was that the Northern Lights were suppose to show up tonight and tomorrow. While they are not as loud or intense, they can make their own subtle sound *shrugs*
But I did a quick search and found a recent update from CTV: saskatoon.ctv.ca . . .
I do feel that there is an explaination, whatever it may be - weather, change in earth's magnetic field, machinery/engineering/science experiment, instruments, HAARP, farming, marketing publicity stunt, construction, mining, people creatively developing a world wide hoax for fun (Which has happened before) while taking advantage of the 2012 scare, etc etc
The sounds also remind me of War of the Worlds...both in the historical sense based on the event created by Orson Wells in 1938, and the sound itself resembles the alien sounds coming from the Tom Cruise movie version:

Thank you Melpomene! Ever since I saw this thread I knew I had heard that sound in a movie, but I couldn't remember which one. That's the Movie! War of the Worlds with Tom cruise! That had seriously been driving me crazy.
Edit: As for actual post, Haven't heard the sounds. Except in the movies Maybe a marketing campaign for War of the Worlds 2? | Comment #9840019 deleted Removed by hummingbird (128773) on 2012-01-25 08:09:41 Did you hear about that strange double post :P

Even if it is a viral marketing thing, its still all kinds of creepy, and I imagine annoying at 11 pm at night.
It sounds EXACTLY like that sound from Red State though. As soon as I watched that clip I thought the two noises were identical.
I want to know so badly what it is for real!
EDIT: This must be sending all the dogs in the neighbourhoods crazy!? Aren't dogs super sensitive to noise? If its that loud and clear being filmed from someones backyard, it must be super loud to them. If we so much as use the blender at our place, all the neighbours dogs go crazy.
Also can't wait to see what kind of trouble the company gets in if it does turn out to be marketing. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By Caffeine Comments: 2221, member since Wed Aug 08, 2007On Wed Jan 25, 2012 03:43 AM
Haven't heard it at all here (which I guess is a good thing), and don't know anyone here who has so it can't be THAT global. But seriously, if it's a viral campaign, the marketers would/SHOULD be in deep poo if they're broadcasting that loudly, and at that time of night. So I vote that it's not a viral campaign.
To me it sounds very mechanical/electrical (not like trumpets at all unless you're an exceptionally bad player with a cardboard instrument). Sort of like mic feedback, but not quite - I've heard something similar before in non-creepy circumstances but I can't put my finger on when/where. I'm leaning towards either upper atmosphere disturbances by HAARP (bonus points if it's got vibrating volcanic ash particles or something, to boot) or something much more mundane, like drilling, heard from a distance when the atmospheric conditions are right.
Then there's also the supermassive solar storm heading this way over the next few days... | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By sjerose Comments: 994, member since Thu May 11, 2006On Wed Jan 25, 2012 07:44 AM
Could be that all the recorders just have the sounds playing on speakers directly behind them. That way it wouldn't pick up through a whole neighborhood and be a noise nuisance, but it would still fit onto the original audio track of the video and sound loud to the camera. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By hummingbird Comments: 6215, member since Tue Apr 19, 2005On Wed Jan 25, 2012 08:14 AM
I've never seen the Northern Lights but my mum and dad have had quite the light show where they live in rural Scotland and they say that there can be a humming sound with it too.
I'll have to ask them if it's similar to this. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By Megan Comments: 12307, member since Wed Mar 17, 2004On Wed Jan 25, 2012 08:59 AM
^Nope, aurora borealis make a very subtle sound, not like this. But as I wrote before...nonsense. Just nonsense. | re: Has anyone heard the "strange noises"? en>fr fr>en By Jonelle Comments: 3239, member since Fri Jul 25, 2008On Wed Jan 25, 2012 09:22 AM
Sometimes I wish I weren't such a skeptic, but I am who I am, and I can't think anything other than "fake" when I watch these videos. It's pretty cool how closely that waterphone instrument can duplicate the sound heard on the videos though. Now I'm picturing some mischievous waterphone player (waterphonist?) tromping all over Canada and making these sounds to freak people out. |
