This is just awesome. It gets even better towards the end with the guys video taping are yelling at people to get out of the road.

I don't understand. It happens every year. Wouldn't you know not to go out in that weather? Or put some winter tires on? I know where I live our streets are a sheet of ice, but I have never seen anything like this happen here before.
It kind of baffles me. |

There's a street like that on my side of town, a major thoroughfare, -- uphill for the going home traffic. The angle is just right for icing up in the evening snow with the wind hitting it. There are times approaching it I've turned around and gone another route even though it means traveling several miles out of my way. I've seen big 4-wheel-drive vehicles (a lot heavier duty than my old, compact Blazer) sliding BACKWARDS down the incline with all 4 wheels skidding! But some cars pick up speed, making a run at it, trying to make it to the top! It reminds me of those bumper cars at the amusement park. |

This is where I live. This road is really bad in the winter, but it's a major connector road to get to a lot of necessary places. A lot of times, especially if you're already out, you have to take this street to get to a lot main neighborhoods and businesses.
There are a lot of people who drive like idiots or don't know how to drive in the snow, yes. But when you have to take a road that's completely covered in ice, the slipping and sliding is unavoidable.

Holy cow. As far as I'm concerned, this may as well be on Mars. I've only seen snow like 5 times in my whole life. I love to ski on it, but I don't have a clue how to drive on it. |

Oh gosh, that is so scary. I have never ever driven in snow and I am glad that I never have to.
Don't cars usually have special tires for snow? |

When I first started to learn how to drive up in New York it was the snowy time of year. Took my driving test in those conditions, too!
One thing I learned early, speed is not your friend in the snow. And the breaks will make it worse! |

If you notice, the ones with issues either go too fast or maybe they do not have proper tires, which in some cases, does not matter.
Because I live in a very hilly, winding road area, there are roads that I avoid, all of the time, in bad weather, and if I can't, I stay home. |

Lauren, you have to purchase and then put on snow tires, and a lot of people don't bother (or like me, leave it too late, and then it snows and every car place in the city is booked up and you have to drive on your all-seasons for a month, haha), so if a big snow is unexpected, people often don't have their winter tires on yet.
I hit a snowbank about a block away from my house this year before I got my tires put on, but I was only going like 15km/h (less than ten miles per hour), so my car was perfectly fine. But because I know how to drive in the snow, I was going slowly around that corner on the ice and didn't act like an idiot when my brakes locked. I just pumped them and turned my wheel so I wouldn't hit anything solid.
I don't understand videos like this either. If you live in a place that gets snow, how have you not learned to drive in it yet? I see it all the time, and I live in a place that has snow more than half the year. Seriously, people? |

Nope. At least mine doesn't and I don't ever recall my parents changing the tires either.
My car used to be even worse before I did get some new tires. Even in the RAIN it would slip and slide. Snow is still pretty scary. During particularly bad weather there's times when it feels like I have NO connection to the road at all.
Fun stuff! |

I have all season tires, but they are only good in some conditions. They are not meant for driving fast in snow, more to keep from getting stuck. |
