Hi all
Im going to be going to turkey in june Very excited
However last year on holiday I found that even though I have wide feet, I feet swole up alot and my feet were in shreds due to flip flops
So I need some suggestions of comfy yet nice looking shoes for walking about in on holiday
Not too expensive and im in the UK
Thanks

Hmm, I was going to suggest something along the lines of FitFlops, but I think they might be slightly on the expensive side. They're very comfy though.
Any cheap flip flops are going to be uncomfortable. I'd be tempted to look for some that are not made of plastic - look for sandals with fabric straps, maybe?
I'd also recommend you break them in before you go on holiday! I have a pair of flip flops that I've had for years (they were really cheap, no idea how they've lasted so long!) and I've worn them so much that they're super comfortable now, no matter how much I wear them! |

I would reccomend something like Teva sandals. (Nike also makes the same concept)
More support than a flip flip but with Velcro bands so you can adjust if your feet swell in the heat. |

I'm all about the birkenstocks! Best shoes ever, they were the only ones that my poor swollen feet fit into. They are a bit more of an investment, but they will last you a long time, and they come in loads of different styles.
They are so worth the extra money. |

I lived in Italy a few summers ago. I took ballet flats, havainas, some cheapy flip flops, canvas pumps and silver flat sandals.
I wore the havianas and the sandals. That was it. The other flip flops I had made my feet sweaty, but the havianas were heaven. They're expensive, but boy are they worth it. |

BIRKENSTOCKS! You might not like the look of them to start with, but if you got some, say patent red ones or something cool, I swear you'll never go back. Ten bajillion times better for your feet than havianas! |

^^ Not necessarily. I worked in a kids shoe shop that specialised in kids with difficult feet - think dropped arches, overly high arches, insoles, splints, kids that have had operations, physio, etc etc.
The number of parents who thought that Birkinstocks were great blew my mind. They are NOT good for your feet. Not at all. They're no better than any other flip flop, and worse than some.
So just a heads up - if like me you think they look grim, don't buy them for the sake of your feet! |

Well for me working as a massage therapist for 7 years, Birks were the ONLY shoes that I could stand in for more than a couple of hours without pain. I've tried pretty much every brand out there.
There is a lot more support in Birks than in regular flip flops. |

I think they're probably ok for standing in/minimal walking, but we had lots of research sent to us from podiatrists/foot surgeons etc. For walking any distance (like, even around town shopping), the sole is too hard. You should have a flexible sole. Inflexible soles put all sorts of pressure on the foot and ankle. So even something like a plimsoll would be better.
However, I accept that plimsolls and the likes have no arch support. So it's swings and roundabouts I guess.
I don't think they're HORRIBLE (for your feet), I just get mad when I see them promoted as being actually GOOD for you. |

I see what you mean, but personally have no issue - I always get the t-bar sort with strap at the ankle, and mine end up really soft! I kind of break them in like pointe shoes, so that the ball of the foot is really flexible. Can easily stand in high demi pointe in them. But if you got the flipflop sort with just a bar across your toes, that would be really tough to break in. |

I have very wide feet, and I had great success with Birkenstocks. I went to Morocco for two months this past summer, and I basically wore my Birkenstocks every day. I walked around a lot, and my feet felt fine. Be aware though, it takes about a while to break them in. You can also get inserts to make it more cushiony, but I really like the harder sole. Mine are still flexible and cusiony to some extent, so I don't really have a problem with them. I also really like Tevas, but they look kind of dorky haha.
Have fun! |
