Ballet - General Ballet and pilates: Good combo? en>fr fr>en By lapikiorejuda Comments: 13, member since Thu Jan 26, 2012On Thu Jan 26, 2012 11:10 AM
Hey guys! I'm really new here Whenever I have queries I've come here but I don't think I've read something entirely related to what I'm asking now.
I live in Peru and I do ballet. It's my favourite type of dance and I started really late: when I was around 18! I've done jazz and it's great as well, but ballet is my favourite, especially because I have a teacher I've seen for a long time (I'm 21 now).
I'm considering doing more advanced ballet with the same teacher for 2 days per week (the other dancers there are also adults who were professionals as children and can correct me more) and Pilates 2 days per week. Do you think that's good training per week for me? As a general workout as well. I'm sort of skinny fat and need to strengthen my abs as well as my calves to achieve better jumps.
Thanks in advance! 7 Replies to Ballet and pilates: Good combo? |

Pilates will always help your ballet and if you get a chance to do any Reformer work that will really help your lower body strength, of course it will help with the abs too, Pilates is all abs even if the exercise has another focus.
It really depends on what you want to achieve as to whether this would be a good program for you though. |

Okay, thank you! Like I said in the first post, I basically want to get leaner on my core and back, as well as gain more strength in my calves to achieve better jumps!
Also, I guess that as a general workout, with ballet and pilates I'm doing enough to stay fit, right?
Thanks again! |

I think pilates will really help you out My teacher was just telling our class on Tuesday how beneficial it can be for us. Like for me she said that it could help my arabesque get higher since that's an issue for me. She told another girl it will help her core and gain better posture. Ballet and Pilates seem to really go well together..definitely a good conbo. |

Aw thank you for replying as well! I finally went to the place where they have Pilates classes, but the schedule was for Tuesdays and Thursdays. That's when I take ballet! So I signed up for yoga, which I love Although, I don't know if I'm doing enough to strengthen my core or my calves! What do you guys think?
Today was my first advanced ballet class and I felt like such an amateur! I was dancing with older women who did ballet their whole lives and have started after a break. And they're amazing! I'm learning new steps I didn't try before.
I will let you know how it goes, and thank you very much for replying once again! |

Yes do pilates. It helps everything. When I broke my foot I did Pilates to keep in shape. |

Pilates is great for ballet! Cross training really helps and even proffesionals do it! Other activities you could do for cross training are swimming, yoga, and biking are a few of the best ones. DO NOT run though it tightens up your hamstrings and can kill your acheles tendon. |
