Hi everyone,
My doctor just put me on Prozac for anxiety, and I was just wondering if anyone has any input about it. If you've been on it for anxiety or for another reason, did it work? Were the side effects tolerable? I'm nervous about the fact that you can't drink on this...not that I drink much or often, just...what would happen if I did? Is this med really bad for your liver?

Lol...I guess you could say I'm having anxiety over my new anxiety med! :) Any feedback would be great. Thanks guys!

I was on the generic form, Fluoxetine, for a little while. To be honest, everyone has different reactions to various anti-depressants, so any of our experiences with it could be totally different from yours.

From what I can remember, I think I went off it because it was making me dizzy, and I don't think it was working. I can't really remember because it was a while ago.

please, henceforth, do things in the proper sequence. Go online and read the side effects before you accept any medication.

Sorry, I can't advise you from experience, but then, there are those whose experience has made them physically incapable of advising you.

You can google for reviews. That's what I did when trying new anti anxiety/ antidepressant drugs. They react differently to everyone, so you can't really know for sure how it effects you until you try it. I have tried three different kinds and have had different effects with each.

Also, you're not supposed to drink while taking antidepressants in general because, according to the pharmacist I asked, the alcohol uses the same receptors in the brain and blocks the antidepressant from doing its job, not to mention it gets you drunk more quickly...or something like that. She said you can drink in small amounts but you shouldn't. I personally have and it depended on the antidepressant I was on what the effects were. On one I really could feel the anxiety and depression being worse the next day. I pretty much have stopped drinking though, I don't think the effects are worth it.

Thanks for the input. I have googled it, I have read multiple sites about side effects, I have read the insert that came with my meds about side effects, and I know all the possible things that could happen. I am educated about the drug. Hence my anxiety. I just came to DDN to ask as well.

I tend to be very affected by side effects and I don't know why. So far the big thing I've noticed is I'm super tired. But I know it takes a few weeks to notice positive effects as well, so I'm trying to stick it out.

I'm one of those people that if there are sideeffects, I'll get them...
Anyway, Prozac worked pretty well for me, in regards to my depression (I wasn't on it for anxiety) but it gave my panic attacks, something I'd never had before.
It also made me super tired, but honestly, all anti-depressants I've been on have had that side effect for me.

I was on it for awhile primarily for anxiety and it worked pretty well. At first it made me really tired, and it gave me headaches that never really went away, but that was it. I like other antidepressants better, but everyone reacts differently so take my experience as a grain of salt.

I am currently on Fluoxetine for OCD and have been on it for about...4 or 5 months? It's been really working well for me. I started off at 10mg and the only side effects that I had are that it killed my appetite in the sense that nothing sounded good to eat, and it made me almost lose the feeling of need to have a bowel movement, if that makes any sense. I was on 10mg for a month and the went to 20mg and the only other side effect was that it made my natural tremor increase a bit, and sometimes in the morning my hands would shake noticeably. Those probably sound really bad, but they really weren't a huge deal, considering the effects when I went on Zoloft. Those side effects only really lasted for about 2 months anyways, and now I have no side effects at all.

It's very important to have a doctor that checks up on you frequently to monitor how you are feeling at first. My doctor was great and wanting to see me often, even if he didn't think I'd be able to notice a difference while taking the meds. I told him all my side effects and was very good at making sure that nothing was really interfering with my life. But like other people have said, it's different for everyone. But I know it has worked quite well for me so maybe it'll work well for you :)

I was on it years ago for depression. Instead of helping it made it worse ... really really fast. Antidepressants are tricky. You have to wait for them to kick in but then decide quickly whether the effects are worth it. Prozac, for me, made me go from sad to a knife at my wrist. Thankfully I figured out in my head that it was the Prozac and didn't hurt myself. Obviously, I'm a Prozac hater but I have friends who have been on it and it works for them. Just be careful which is true for all drugs.
