I want to dance with 2 sheets of fabric spread across the stage, and moving as waves, but has anyone ever tried to dance with fabric as a prop? What kind did you use?

Also, my intention is to keep feet covered, as well as dancers who have yet to begin the piece, by the fabric. Do you think this will work?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I was in a dance with props like this when dancing with s professional company. Yes it can work, the thing to consider is the cost. I'd recommend lycra which will have enough weight and thickness not to be transparent under the stage lights, it also has the most stretch.

You will need a lot of yardage - lycra costs around $9.00-$12.00/yard a yard is 36 inches...how many inches across is the stage, then add in enough to secure the prop at each end...it adds up quickly.

I used an old genuine white parachute in a dance piece. It was a very light and silky fabric, buoyant, but also translucent, and circular. I found it on ebay for around $100.

I think fabric can be heavy and expensive, as you would need about 50 feet at least. I would look for a bolt of continuous thin plastic backdrop instead. It could be cut in a strip more easily, and would be somewhat sturdy.

If you want a light, floaty ripple kind of effect for your waves, silk is the best fabric. It is also very expensive.

Chiffon will also work and there are different weights.
