I am applying for a job where they want all of my documents e-mailed: resume, cover letter, and writing sample. I don't have any information about the person to whom I'll be sending it, and since it's through e-mail there isn't really an associated physical address. What should I put in the header area where I'd usually put the name of the person, the company, and its address? It's even to a specific e-mail address for this one position, so it's not like there are any clues in that, like the department or whatever. Should I just use the address of the company even though I'm not sending it there? (In fact, I can barely even find the physical address). I just really don't want to leave that part blank.

Edit: I just found out the name of the head of the department I think the position is in...should I risk it and address it to her? I have no idea if she's the one actually doing the hiring for this position, though.

Call the company, and just ask to whom you should address it. But don't just guess. If you absolutely cannot find out, you can use To Whom It May Concern, but that should be a last resort.

And you should always include an inside address - even if you're sending it via email. Good luck.

Oh yes, I was going to mention that. On the position description it says "no phone calls, please." Otherwise I would. :-\

I don't know what type of company it is, but likely if they want no phone calls and it is a generic email address it could likely just be going through HR first. Did someone refer you to the job or do you know anyone that works there? Ask them. If you cannot get a name, try to find out the department name. That way you could at least address it "Director of _____" or "Human Resource Department." if nothing else works, I prefer "Dear Hiring Manager" over "To Whom it May Concern."

Honestly if they don't give out that sort of information, I don't feel that they should judge you on that aspect.

IMO, she shouldn't use Dear Hiring Manager unless she knows it's going to a manager. In some companies, directors and VPs don't like to be called managers. Being generic is better than being wrong.

Yeah, even though I now know who the VP of the department to which I'm applying is, I have no idea if it's actually going to her or not and there is no other clue about there being anyone else. I'm not sure if they even have a hiring manager. "To whom it may concern" it is, then.

There are ways around "no phone calls". If you try the switchboard or reception of the company you can find out a physical address and a name without bothering the HR department and without needing to leave your own name.
