Beauty Tipping for beauty services en>fr fr>en By ballerinatwirler Comments: 1685, member since Sat May 29, 2004On Tue Jan 31, 2012 08:14 PM
I'm always a little lost on how much to tip for any kind of beauty service. Today I got my haircut and eyebrows waxed and it only cost me $20 which is crazy cheap so I gave the girl a 4 dollar tip. After thinking about it I realized that hairdressers do so much work and I wasn't sure if a 20% tip was good or bad.
I'm getting a massage in a few weeks and wondering how much should I tip there? 11 Replies to Tipping for beauty services |

I'm in the beauty industry and generally 20% is the norm. Now I charge 20$ for just an eyebrow wax so I'm not sure if this was a discount or special deal that you got. If it was then etiquette says you tip 20% on the regular price not the discounted price. And of course if your service was exceptional its always great to add a few more dollars and if your service was less then great take a few dollars away. And if your service is down right horrible then don't tip at all! I know a lot of people in the service industry would disagree with me but I believe a tip is something you earn not something you should just expect. . Hope thiS helps! |

I tip 20% but that is for exceptional service. I think it depends to on how the salon si run. Some stylists are employees of the salon, whereas others rent space. |

Almost everyone rents space. And the ones that are considered salon employees, they still rely largely on tips to make their wages. I worked in a salon where I was considered an employee, and made minimum wage. My checks were about $100 a week.
I usually give $2 or $3 for a haircut, $5 or $6 for a color. I've got a crazy ton of hair, coloring it takes alot of work! |

I have a ton of hair, very thick and long. It takes my stylist over two hours to foil, color and cut my hair. It was $75 last time and I tipped her $15. Yeah, that's 20%. Mani-pedi runs me about $30 and I tip about $5 for that. If more than one person works on me, it's $5 each.

$2 or $3 for an eyebrow wax, $5 for mani, $10 for mani/pedi (they're scrubbing my feet, hello!), and I've been tipping $10 for a haircut since forever. Sometimes I'll leave more depending on my mood. |

I've been working on and off in spas as a massage therapist (right now is an "off" moment) for the past year. Most spas charge $60-70 for an hour long full body massage; I work FOR the spa instead of renting a room so I usually get 40-50% commission on it. The normal tip is in between $5 and $7, but $10 or even $15 makes a HUGE difference at the end of the day.
I can't account for cosmetologists, but I know that doing massage therapy is a physically stressful job and most of us ONLY get commission, so generous tips go a long, long long way. Most of the time, my tips are actually the money I spend on gas to get to and from work; oftentimes I've only had one client that I've gone in for and so by the time I've waited for walk-ins and left again, I'll have spent $5+ on gas money just getting to and from the spa for a single appointment. |

Thanks everyone. Since my haircuts/waxing as usually so cheap I'll tip 20% for an okay job but 30% for excellent service.
It was awkward yesterday because the stylist didn't say two words to me besides " How do you want your haircut ". I wasn't expecting a major conversation but at least talk to me so we're not the only ones in the salon in complete silence. And when I went home and styled my hair I realized that it's completely uneven. My bangs are three different lenghts and one side of my hair is an half of an inch longer then the other side.
Now here's the questions should I go back and get it corrected or go somewhere else? |

Hm. I like to develope a longterm relationship with my hair stylist and nail technicians. I enjoy the chatting and getting to know each other and I feel I get better service because of that. Plus it's enjoyable. Whichs puts me in a mood to tip higher.
I would have no problem going back to my stylist and having something corrected. In fact, I just had my hair cut and colored last week and I am going back next week to have my cut reshaped. I need some bangs or layers around my face. I intend to pay, however, because she did what I asked and did a fine job. I have just changed my mind since last week about what I want. If I wasn't happy with a mistake such as uneven layers, I would ask her to fix it and not expect to pay, but I know she would be embarrassed and not expect payment either.
With someone you don't know, it's a little trickier because you don't know her or her standard policies. Regardless, I would call and explain the problem and go back in to let her fix it. And I wouldn't expect to pay. If she messed it up again, I would not go back.

The girl I go to for my hair is the only girl who has ever actually listened to the words that are coming out of my mouth. She does exactly what I want and if she can't or thinks something else would work better, she talks to be about it first and lets me see everything. She also explains what she is doing as she is doing it which makes me feel more comfortable.
Anyways... I usually do 20%. A colour runs me about $100 so I tip $20 on top of that. Last time I cheaped out a bit though. I spent $150 and tipped $25 only. I was really tight on cash and could not get it up to the $30 (yes, I was really that tight on cash). I feel terrible so I will probably tip extra when I go back in a month to finish off the colour in my hair. |

20% is usually the amount I tip for hair but sometimes I just can't afford to pay that much. I've had up a bill of up to $120 before pre-tip. In cases like those I'll give $12 - $15 if I can, and less if I can't. I live in a big city and prices here are outrageous for no reason. If I have a relationship with the hairdresser then I'll make up for it by tipping more at my next appointment. At my old salon, the guy who did my hair was cool. Even if I couldn't afford to tip twice in a row, he was happy if I tipped 10% the third time. And if my tip was $5 - $10 short and I had the money the next appointment I'd just throw it in with the 20% then. That kind of thing always seemed to be acceptable. He retired though, and ever since then I've been doing my own hair and only going to random salons when I have too.
For nails and eyebrows, I always tip $5. |
