My full-time job is harming my health. It's at a bilingual call centre and there are about 15 of us crammed into a small room that is not connected with the rest of the floor. The room is basically an interior/closed/secluded space. Each person has dual monitors as well. When I leave the room I feel that the air is different and lighter on the rest of the floor. I get headaches, sore throats, ear pain. Usually Mon-Tue I'm ok, but then come Wednesday I start feeling sick. I recuperate over the weekend and then eventually feel weird all over again.
And it's been giving me ear pain. I went to the doctor and got some drops but they don't seem to be working (I'm going back to the doctor on Monday). I switch the headset from one ear to the other but that makes them both hurt. The area around my right ear also hurts, it's not only the inside of my ear.
I also wasn't even hired for call centre. I was hired to do admin/paper work but then someone decided to switch me. They weren't even paying me what the other call centre employees were getting paid, I had to contact HR and ask why I was getting paid less. I'm expecting my retroactive pay tomorrow. Also, some of the people who call in are so rude and it really upsets me when they tell me I can't speak French-which I know I can.
I have a part-time job as well, which I really like. I've started the full-time in November. I plan on returning to school in September, I'm just taking some time off. I just feel like this F/T job is draining me and I don't have the time or desire to do anything I like. I was hoping to use my time off from school to gain experience in an office setting, maybe write some newspaper articles.
I just feel I don't really know what to do right now. 3 Replies to Thinking of quitting my full-time job |

There will be a lot of people that will probably tell you to not quit your FT job until you have something else lined up. But I totally get the call center thing. Very few people can do it for any extended period of time. Some days I am surprised that I even made it 1.5 years at mine. My ears would hurt from the headset and my head would hurt from the bad lighting and the people screaming at me for 8+ hours a day. But I got paid, so I did it. Finally I found another part time job that had the opportunity to turn into full time, and I took a leap. I got lucky that I do have FT employment now, but it is a really hard adjustment because I make so much less money and I had to get some help from my family. It really depends on what kind of support system you have, and if financially you can risk it. If you quit, what kind of burden would that put on you/others?
I feel ya, stay strong. |

That's the thing, I'm not supporting anyone, I still live with my parents (I just recently finished my undergrad). I do also have a part-time job, which pays less. I was hoping to earn some money and move out. I do plan on returning to school, in a different city, so I was looking to save money for that. But I do already have some money saved.
But thank-you hooray4jj |

I would say it depends on how serious you are about going back to school in september.
If you are serious:
Okay eight months is not a short time, but you said you already have something in savings. If you quit you could maybe get another part-time job, so you don't really depend on your parents support (desides living with them). Keep in mind that going back to school will also be stress, you have to get back to a learning schedule, and you have to be relaxed to start school. So maybe you would be to burned out by September. Is this full-time job really worth it? You already sad, that it is not in the field you hoped it would be, so this job don't really help you with your CV.
If you are not that serious:
You already have some kind of graduation and now you are trying to start to get work-experience. Your boss stucked you with some work you didn't really applied for. But since you may continue work. You should look out for another full-time job, or asked your part-time job boss if you could work there full-time. Or depending on how "friendly" your current full-time job boss is, asked him about another position or why exaclty you end up in this growded office.
You need work experience and you don't need a gab in your CV, so you should try to improve the situation at work or search for a new and better job.
Ahh, way to long but I hope I could explain my thoughts on this in a proper way! |
