I think my best friend is in love with me and I'm not sure what to do. I'm in a relationship with someone else. This is really awkward. 7 Replies to I think my best friend is in love with me |

I don't know that I would have called the guy my best friend, but yeah, been there. Dude had a crush on me that was the worst kept secret in the WORLD.
He finally confessed, and I just had to tell him the truth - that all of this was very nice, and I was very flattered that he thought/was willing to say those things, but that I was in a very happy relationship with somebody else, and that fact wouldn't be changing. :/
It's horribly awkward, and we pretty much don't speak now, but it was what it was, basically. |

Welcome to my world. EVERYONE is in love with me. Everyone. Friends, neighbors, acquaintances, co-workers... It's so difficult to be attractive. |

Well for a start, Panic, I'm not used to people finding me attractive and the other thing is I don't want to lose the friendship.
Theresa, my friend hasn't said anything but I worry that it might end up the way your friendship did. |

The guy that told me sat on it for three years before he said anything. Sometimes, they gotta screw up their courage, haha... |

The only thing you can do WITHOUT bringing it up is to make sure your behavior isn't leading him on at all, which may mean being a bit colder towards him. I won't make assumptions about how you two interact, but if you're a hugger or playful-toucher or a flirter, then those activities might lead him on and encourage him to say something. If you make subtle changes to let him know that you do not prefer him in that way, then he may back off and find another romantic interest. |

*Raises hand* I've also been there. Way back in HS, a best guy friend back admitted he had a crush on me. I respectfully decline the offer of furthering the relationship. Thankfully, it turned out well - we moved on with our friendship, he saw me as a sister, and even had a girlfriend. That was around 5 years ago now, and we are still friends today.
It really depends, can't really predict how your friend will act. He will either be embarassed and distance himself away/detach, or take it to stride and do his best to work on making the friendship the way it was before.
All you can really do is not lead him on, be very clear if the topic comes up, but also be kind. It will be very akward, and there will probably be a big readjustment phase too.
Overall, if he is a reasonable guy, he might not do anything anyway if you are already in a relationship.
Side note too: Make sure you read the signs well enough, and that you are not accidently dealing with a misconception. Not sure how long you two have been friends, nor do I know any of you personalities, but there have been many cases of misunderstandings before amongst friendships. Another friend of mine thought her (relatively new) best guy friend liked her romanticly. Until she discovered he was actually in love with someone else altogether ![:] :]](http://dancenet.s3.amazonaws.com/images/blue/emoticons/joy.gif) She told me how thankful she was that she hadn't brought it up, on how embarassed/awkward she would have been.

I have a guy friend who is always announcing his " undying love " for me. We were super close growing up and drifted apart after high school. I reconnected with him this past summer and invited him to a family function because he knows all of my family. Everything goes smoothly and the next day he starts sending me messages about his feelings. He knew I was in a relationship and had plans to come between us even though that never would've worked. I ended up having to just keep him as an casual friend that I don't hang out.
It sucked losing a friend but I couldn't handle how awkward it was. |
