Tap Tap Song, Advanced, French Theme for dance show en>fr fr>en By buffercheen Comments: 59, member since Mon Nov 07, 2005On Mon Feb 06, 2012 04:48 PM
As usual, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place but here goes!
I have been trying to find a song to choreograph a solo advanced tap dance to, which fits 'France'. To explain, our school is doing an 'around the world in dance' theme and I am doing a solo which connects the 'can can'with a couple of other group french songs.
It needs to be enjoyable to listen to, recognisable by sound to be 'french'(in other words-not be something like 'I can't speak french' by Girls Aloud)
The only track I have found that I kind-of like up to now is 'La Vie En Rose' and probably the Louis Armstrong version as it's a bit jazzier! I did like the waltz from the film Amelie but it's a tad too fast for the kind of tap I'd be doing.
Instrumental or not is acceptable.
I'm hoping someone may know of a track that I can't possibly have come accross, I'd be hugely appreciative if anyone can help?
Thanks so much! 9 Replies to Tap Song, Advanced, French Theme for dance show |

I am thinking maybe something from the movie "An American in Paris" www.amazon.com . . . should fit your theme...? Like the song "Tra-la-la" (I am pretty sure they did a tap dance to this song in the movie) or "I Got Rhythm" or maybe even "S'Wonderful." I checked and those are all on iTunes as well.
I am sure I will think of more and I will be back, just nothing else coming to mind right now.
Thought of something else already. Is there anything on the Moulin Rouge or Burlesque soundtrack you could use? Or how about something very cabaret?
Check out this soundtrack and see if there is anything you like www.amazon.com . . . (just click on listen to samples on the left hand side of the screen) |

I don't know if it would be useful but in the ballet 'la fille mal gardee' there is a clog dance, it's more like national but there are some definite tap steps in there. I spotted cramp rolls, rifts and spring shuffles when I watched just now. It is a French ballet and is set in France but it isn't well known so I don't know if you can use it, have a look on YouTube the royal ballet version is particularly good. Not that the others aren't you can just hear the taps better in it and I like the acting . If nothing else it might inspire you.
My only other thought is something from beauty and the beast, I've always thought tap would be boot to be our guest. |

I don't know a lot about tap, but my favourite French music is the Yé-Yé stuff from the 60s- France Gall and Françoise Hardy and all that. "Laisse tomber les filles", "Le jazz à gogo", "Y'a du soleil a vendre" are three that might be fun for a dance.
I don't know how fast you're looking, but some other mid-tempo type stuff I like is "Ensemble" by Coeur de Pirate (she's Quebecoise but it's French-language so might count anyway) and "Ta douleur" by Camille (or any Camille. She's so cool.) |

The first song that came to my mind was "It's Nicer in Nice." It's from the musical, "The Boyfriend," sung by the feisty French maid. It has a fast tempo. |

The classic "C'est Magnifique" may be a good choice too (check out Maurice Chevalier's or Ella Fitzgerald's version.)
(You also might want to explore the soundtrack from "Gigi.") |

Look into music by Josephine Baker! I feel as though you'll really enjoy tapping to her music (I know I do) |

Some of the songs on this cd may work for tap - Putumayo Kids presents French Playground. putumayokids.com
They are not "kiddie" songs but definately sound french!
