Pointe is just an extension of ballet so any exercises that you would do to help strengthen yourself for ballet classes can be applied for the preparation for pointework. A special attention to plenty of releves, rises, and theraband exercises for the ankles and muscles of the foot can be especially useful. Ensuring your balancing skills are very solid will also help a dancer moving closer to pointework.

Not ever dancer goes through a formal assessment in order to go en point. I never did. My teacher simply told which students were ready to buy pointe shoes and put them in a class that had pointe work in it at the next time it was appropriate to change classes. Some teachers do assessments to test students balance, strength, stamina, etc.
