I wear tights currently. When I had a white dress I wore white ankle socks, but when I got my first aboyne I switched over to nylons. I don't think socks usually look quite as good with the aboyne, but they can be cute with a white dress.

My daughter doesn't wear either socks or tights- bare legs.

She started out in short white socks with a full aboyne as that's the 'fashion' here for little girls, but once she got to Premier it has been bare legs ever since.

Are you aloud to do that? I would think so though because to the judge she could be wearing tights its only really you and her who know the real truth!!!

^Animal mad, the SOBHD dress rules say

Socks: White without frill, ankle or knee high or natural coloured tights may be worn.

The operative word is may. Socks or tights may be worn, but don't have to be. It's like the black ribbon on the hornpipe jumper- it may be worn, but doesn't have to be.

As I said, most girls here aged 10-15ish don't wear tights or socks. Some older girls/young women wear tights, but it's certainly more common to see bare legs than covered ones.

I generally do bare legs at competitions too. More for convenience when changing. Most competitions I go to we do Highlands first then Nationals. I just don't feel like struggling to get nylons on when my legs are already a little sweaty and I'm trying to change quickly. I do use little nylon footies though because I don't like putting my bare feet into my shoes.

Always tights. I find that they make your legs look nicer (especially if your legs are usually really pale like mine and you get slightly tan tights)... Plus, I'm injury prone so they hide the bruises and scrapes quite well :P (random thought... This shouldn't still be an issue at 16 should it? Hmm...)

My daughter wears white socks. She can't stand the feeling of the tights/nylons/pantyhose! As a matter of fact, she can't stand the feeling of her hornpipe either!

My girls wear white knee highs as per the directive from their teacher. They are young and wear the knee highs for the highlands so it makes it easy.

White socks look much nicer on a younger dancer.

When I first started competing in Beginner, I wore white knee high socks. Then when I moved into Novice I wore white ankle socks until I was in Premier.
I personally prefer white ankle socks for younger dancers(10 or 11 and under) and nylons(natural tights) for older dancers.

I wear neutral tights for competition and I always have since I am of smaller stature, it gives the illusion of my legs being longer.

My eldest daughter (16) wears pantyhose and my youngest daughter (14) wears white socks. Each as a personal preference.

Socks when girls are younger and tights once they are older. I've never heard of people wearing bare legs, but maybe I've seen it loads and just assumed they were wearing tights. I don't suppose u would notice. 😃

So what would be the "Norm" for a 7 year old beginner? White ankle socks or white knee socks? My DD will be starting Beginner very soon and need to start preparation for this new costume. Thank you in advance!

Maybe ask your teacher, or another mum of the same age dancer at your school/studio?

I have seen maybe one or two dancers here wearing long knee-high socks with their aboyne in 12 years of attending highland comps. Most sock wearers wear ankle or crew socks here, and the ratio of socks to bare legs is decreasing, I feel. Even some beginners are now going bare legged, while it used to be an intermediate or premier thing to go out of socks into bare legs.

We had a dance teacher whose rule was if you needed a bra, you could no longer wear socks, so basically 11 or older wore pantyhose.

Growing up, I would always wear opaque white tights. But I guess they're not up to spec any more.

In Scotland most younger competitors wear white ankle socks, when they get to about 12 years old most change to tights, although in the summer a few will not wear either. in saying that my 14 year old is resisting the change from socks to tights as she hates them!

I wear tights as I hate the look of socks on myself.

My daughter wears socks and she's eleven years old. I think that younger girls look better in socks but it's really up to yourself.

I personally wear tights because I think it looks nicer, I feel like white knee socks take away from the outfit.

Haha I feel the same way. My legs are covered in bruises so I need tights to cover them ;)

My daughter wore tights all the time, she felt the socks made her legs look shorter.
