Anton Engelbrecht started his ballet training with Adele Gerber at the age of 11. His teacher was Dianne cheesman
He matriculated at the Johannesburg Art, Ballet, Drama and Music school (now the National School for the Arts), receiving the schools Dux medallion in 1986. His professional career spanned eight years, dancing for PACT, CAPAB and NAPAC, appearing in productions of Nutcracker, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppelia, Les Patineurs, Spartacus, Romeo and Juliet, La Sylphide, Sleeping Beauty, Orpheus in the Underworld, Don Quixote, Three Musketeers, Merry Widow, Witchboy, Lady and the Fool, The Rakes progress, Sherezade and Giselle. His full time career as a performing artist culminated in 1994 with Boswell Wilkie Circus as the Dancing Ringmaster. Anton also returned to the stage appearing as guest artist for the Johannesburg Youth Ballet as James in la Sylphide and the Port Elizabeth Youth Ballet as Dr. Drosselmeyer in David Poole’s Nutcracker.
Anton married Charmaine, a flying trapeze artist, in 1988. They have five children Nicola ( 17), Jessica(13). The tragic death of their son, Jonathan, in February 1999 inspired them to embark on a campaign to nurture the performing arts in South Africa. They founded Circus Theatre – the imaginative initiative where the performing arts support the community. Various programs are currently running under this banner, CARE : House Jonathan (a home fore mentally challenged adults is firmly established. Anton and Charmaine celebrated the birth of baby Christopher on the 4th August 2000.The most recent addition to the family is another boy, Cameron, born in July 2006.
Anton showed remarkable determination and strength of character when he overcame, against all odds, a brain hemorrhage after being bitten by a spider in June 2001. This resulted in him being partially sighted( he has no sight in the left hemi field of both eyes)His determined dedication to cope with this handicap is inspirational .He has more insight than most fully sighted people.
