flavadance's Bio
Born in Hopkinsville, KY on July 27, 1977, Nance grew up in the theater, her mother was born on stage so, it was only right that she would began performing in the theater at age five, and took her first dance lessons at age 8 . Her childhood was filled with a variety of creative pursuits. She explored jazz, Hip-Hop, and other dance styles, practiced debate and speech, flourished in theater arts, directed and wrote plays with her mother but, her real passion come from her love for children. With F.L.A.V.A. her goal is to begin a mentor ship program with the arts as a base. Inspiring all children in the program to flourish and become mentors themselves, always reaching back to pour into the children of the next generation.
She is considered by many to be the most innovative choreographer of her generation; Tonya has her dancers flow through a range of movements familiar and unorthodox. They run, skip, and jump, flex their bodies, and move through space in an energized mix of jazz, modern, urban, and other dance styles.
Nance found herself making connections between verbal and physical communication at an early age. "Sometimes it was so hard to communicate, to say what hurt to express pain" she said. "Dance helped me to express joy, pain, sorrow, hope, happiness; dance and theater became a way of escaping all realities and creating something so beautiful, free, it gave me hope for tomorrow. My works are not just dance they are an expression from my soul.
Nance comes at you with the full passion of movement, the pursuit of Destiny and purpose. In person, she is as engaging and provocative as she is in her work; she is doing more than just "something." Whether it's through conversation, or on stage, the depth of her creativity leaves you breathless.
