Aroldo Fernandes holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Dance Performance and a Pedagogy License in Dance Education from Federal University of Bahia, where he worked as a professor in the Department of Choreographic Studies. In 1999 Aroldo was awarded a grant by the CNPq- Centro Nacional de Pesquisa (National Center of Research) to conduct a project focusing on the relationship of dance costumes and their interference with the dance movement. He is also the Artistic Director of the Contemporary Dance Group HIS. HIS is a contemporary dance company that performs throughout Brazil that recently was awarded a prize by the National Foundation of Art, Brazil (FUNARTE). In 2001 Aroldo was invited by the Department of Dance at ASU (Arizona State University) and the Center for Latin American Studies to do Collaborative Work in Choreography with graduate student Alberto Lima. In 2003 he was warded a prize by the Cultural Foundation of Bahia to compose "Cartas de Amor" (Love Letters), a work based on a Portuguese nun's letters to a Military figure in the 17th century. His last work was entitled "In The White of The Eye" based on the novel Blindness of José Saramago and created to the bodies of Flux Dance Project, piece that was performed throughout Arizona. Aroldo has worked in the past with prominent Contemporary dance figures in Brazil and United States like Iara Cerqueira, Cristina Castro, David Iannitelli, Fernando Passos, Lisa R. Chow, Ann Ludwig, Sonia Valle, Frances Goritsas, Jennifer Walker, Frank Hendeller and Diane Elshout. He choreographed for the National Workshop of Contemporary Dance Salvador, Brazil, Phoenix Experimental Arts Festival, Dance in the Desert Festival, Las Vegas, NV. He is a former member/Choreographer of Desert Dance Theater, AZ and performed also with ALudwig Dance Theater, AZ. He is one of the co-founders and Artistic directors of Via Corpo Dance Research of Paradise Valley Community College Phoenix, AZ.
